Test equipment abuse... or

Or… How I fixed a power supply… That someone abused.

One of the E-Lab’s BK Precision 1550 power supplies from Mouser was killed when a user hooked up some source of voltage to it backwards. The most likely culprit was a battery pack someone was trying to charge. The results were it showing 0.00 volts at 3.05 amps output when the output of the supply was turned on.

I took it apart and found 2 blown traces and a shorted protection diode mounted to the small PCB soldered directly to the output terminals. I patched across two blown traces and replaced the protection diode across the outputs of the supply. and the outputs now work and the short circuit is gone:

A tip of the hat to @artg_dms for helping to dig through the bins of parts to find a suitable diode to replace the shorted one and a donor diode whose legs were used to patch the traces.
