Talk threads show up in Google Searches

Did we know that our Talk threads show up in Google search results?

Yes.
And how.
Been discussed many, many times…
Yet still seems to shock many.
:smiley:

Yeah, in fact Google does a really good job of listing the subject matter your looking for when searching for an item on talk.

It is weird when we are having in fighting that it is public, but at the same time it is a source for a lot of out reach to other that might join or learn from what we are doing. In the end I think it is a net positive. And having you messes as public as your achievements allows a level of honesty that few are willing to put out there.

If desired, it could be suppressed with a two line robots.txt file in the talk.dallasmakerspace.org domain root (e.g. https://talk.dallasmakerspace.org/robots.txt):

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

Adding a Robots Meta tag to the <head> section of every page template would be a belt-and-suspenders addition:

<META NAME=“ROBOTS” CONTENT=“NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW”>

This is actually a really good reason to have a ‘members only’ area, so that public (and fun!) threads can get indexed and more serious discussions about policy and internal politics and tool misuse and messes left on the floor can at least be behind a (thin) curtain.

Is there a way to have a certain tag force a user to be logged in to see it? This by itself would keep google out of certain threads, by OP or mod actions. Given that this board is open for anyone to make an account, it’s not much of an impediment to seeing it, only making it slightly less visible to outsiders.
