I’m sure something like this would come in well under $750…

Those are awesome. Now I have a tool crush.

What about rolling shelves akin to medical file cabinents?

This very product was mentioned during the meeting last night.

Had to get up at 4:30 so I didn’t stick around and haven’t had time to watch the recording. Great minds think alike?

I’m not bashing the suggestion, as I think it’s a good one. But the fundamental problem with “library stacks” is reaching retrieving a heavy box from the top shelf. With a carousel shelving system, the box is brought to the operator, who stays safely on the floor, lifts the box from waist height, etc. Also, as I have mentioned elsewhere, when floor space is at a premium, but you have 10’ of empty space over your head, the best way to “acquire more floor” is to expand up. It does not come cheap, though, but then, neither does more floor…

I agree with all your points. I REALLY like the idea of a carousel, I just can’t see any way to implement at DMS. Thinking something like http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NB96mYH-tQw/VKhj3iElo2I/AAAAAAADgVM/TzIGBfyne5c/s1600/parkmatic.jpeg in the workshop area for all the projects

Hmm…
Seems very easy to me.
All I lack is

$$$

and board approval to make it happen…

I believe one of the original intents was to raise money. Offering to spend $750 to raise $1,000 is a little backwards. The real need is to clear our some space for the Parks Vending equipment.

It’s my opinion that that’s a sh!tty reason to be doing this. The right reasons to do this include to give more floor space, more organization, and better member services. The racks we have right now could be consolidated into a single wall of carousel storage and provide the same level (or better) of service, give the capitalist pigs at Parks Pantry the opportunity to fleece the members, bring the 'Space a spiffy 21st late 20th century appearance and function, and overall improve the quality of life for members in general. I have nothing against the proposed charging for storage space; since we cannot have “enough to go around”, it’s one reasonably equitable way to provide for those who need. I find distasteful that it’s being treated as “free money” as well as the leverage of the Parks Pantry Experiment to eminently domain the space.
I realise the carousel storage is a pipe dream, which is why this thread is labelled SOHR, but sometimes humorous investigations can uncover interesting truths, so we’ll see what falls out…

EDIT: Just realized what Lampy was saying about spending $750 to bring in $1000. So I guess I am curious, since I tuned out during the Parks Pantry part of the discussion other than to hear that it was going to be done, why can’t they work in the already allotted space?

Unfortunately comrade Allen grows weary of the toil our previous governing policy put upon him.

What it comes down to is, we have essentially been exploiting free labor out of our members to do the snack runs. We would like to stop that and relieve them of the burden. Don’t worry it shouldn’t effect you too much as I rarely see you at the space, only on the forums.

A post was split to a new topic: Parks Pantry Discussion

Compared to you, I’m sure my on site appearances are few, though I have no idea why you would even know if I were there and think judgment based on personal observations should be sparingly employed. I suspect our goals and experiences are significantly different. I find the in-person culture frustratingly impenetrable, but nevertheless I have done my best to put back in what I get out. Since metal shop was a huge part of why I joined, that’s been shamefully minimal. Sometimes life changes.

Since I intentionally avoid use of the snack services supplied in the galley, I echo your predictions on its impact to me as far as snack services are concerned. But as part of the apparent shift from volunteer to hired labor, It’s not that I don’t understand, but I may disagree a bit. And as part of the eternally ongoing storage concern, I reassert the two should not be linked.

LOL @ comrade Allen comment! Thank you for helping my joke work.
