Squirrels in the Ceiling

Meanwhile Wednesday afternoon at DMS.

What happens when @TBJK decides there wasn’t anything on the TV and @jphelps is bored after teaching his Baby Shapeoko class that afternoon. Hey gang, lets install more some gear.

The large and very heavy air filter above the lasers that used to be blowing cold air out the back door has a new home. It is now helping combat dust in the wood shop. Hopefully it will keep the AC filters a little cleaner for a bit longer.

The filter was loaded up on the trusty rent a lift and driven over to woodshop.

Looking happy that the load made it through the obstacle course without crashing into something. Yes, that is his happy face.

After a quick pit stop, a new driver @jphelps took the controls of the speedster lift.

So this monstrosity of an air filter is meant to aid in the reduction of woodshop dust making its way into the AC filters mounted on the roof.

The installation process at this point was to attach threaded rods into the roof trusses twenty feet above. How is that done, you ask? First you place a self tapping threaded nut on the end of a threaded rod(long headless bolt), then place the rod inside the black pole, attach a drill, stick the pole up into the ceiling and drill. Looks like this.

You do this a few times and then begin to attach other pieces of metal(Unistrut channel) to the threaded rods. Just like a jumbo erector set.

Rinse and repeat a few times and the result is a ceiling mount that holds a lot of weight up in the air.

They are looking perplexed. Second squirrel asks the first one, will it fit, will it actually hold this thing up? For how long?
The answer was sure, after we add some more stuff up there.

The pride of getting 'er done.

Building the sling.

Each threaded rod assembly is derated to hold at least 1500#. Four rods were installed and then cross bracing was added to distribute the weight. The filter is then attached using its 3/8" integrated mounts. This is where the rods that are protruding from the filter terminate.

These filter units have a special horizontal design that allows for a massive filter surface area.

@TBJK takes one last look to see if he would personally walk under this thing as mounted. Sure, why not was the answer.

One last look on the way out (12:45AM on Thursday). Yep, another quick(six hour) DMS project.

You forgot the adventures of looking for Unistrut past.

Sorry about that, that was my fault. The two pieces were used for the server room mini split condenser line supports and I forgot to let y’all know.

Came here looking for photos of wayward tree rats running through the plenum gnawing on cat5 wires. Disappointed. :joy:

Great work, guys.

Ahhhh…a unique opportunity to get some pics of the rarely sighted round-bellied long-bearded red-blooded American squirrel, sometimes found in the company of the Rocky-Mountain stubble-headed squirrel.

I’m sure the Laser committee won’t miss this filter unit :stuck_out_tongue:

We’ll see how well it performs in the woodshop.
