Spring 2018 Pyro Fest

In case you missed it, PyroFest was this past weekend. It was hot, then freezing, but something you should experience at least once in your life.

Here are couple photos of what you missed. (If you were there, add more!)

I did not know this was a thing! Is it only once per year?

Next one is in October.

Thanks for coming out @motopilot, @uglyknees, @Robert_Davidson : Sorry we had the weirdest single cold day in Texas?!

Post some pictures if you have them, thanks.

Shame I couldn’t make it this year; unlike Caddo, I couldn’t go take a hotel the entire weekend. Photos and video I’ve seen posted make it look like a good time.

Cheers,
-Jim

I didn’t take a bunch of photos - I was more concerned with being the perfect example of someone who has no idea how to pack or be in the cold for extended periods of time. I believe I perfected it. The picture of Ken and Nick is perfectly in focus it looks blurry because of the shivering. Thanks to Clay for keeping me alive with soup.

It was a really great time.
Are you warm - no
Are you having fun - yes

Was this a ‘posted’ event? I don’t recall seeing this published.

It wasn’t an official Dms event. I found it from knowing the guys on Facebook.

We really didn’t post it on talk this year. The next event is much closer in Caddo Mills in October’ish.

Thanks. Probably a lot of confused readers looking at this going ‘dang, what did I miss?’

I would like to teach some theory classes as DMS and then have a practicum portion at the event site.

What on making explosives?

Won’t that get you on a government list?

I bet everyone who has ever attended something like this got a quiet drive by in a nondescript car when that Austin bomber was loose.

Or am I just being paranoid?

Otherwise count me in.

I mean count my friend John in. I have no interest in things like this. This is dumb. But John will go. He’s not really a friend. He just like this guy I barely know/made up.

Ah. Good ol’ John Smith. Acquaintance to many; friend to none.

When you do this stuff legally you will be surprised how little the GOV messes with you. Our goal with Pyrotechnic Artists of Texas is to teach and support the trade of Pyrotechnics. We do these events on the up and up and work hard to make sure everything is not only LEGAL, but SAFE! We have many professional pyrotechnics companies that work with us. We pull permits, insurance, and work with the local AHJ to make sure they are in the loop.

No need to hide when your not doing something wrong.

Sure. That wasn’t my point. My point is that the FBI has a documented history of people with particular interests. Most of them aren’t suspected of doing wrong. But what it does is it allows law enforcement to have a list of people with possible skill sets that are a first consideration when a crime has been convicted. They note people who post things online. They note people with potent political leanings. They note people with computer skills and an interest in security flaws. Then when something happens, they can say well these are the people in Texas who have that particular skill set.

There’s a lot of this, especially concerning the 60s that’s now declassified- people with interests in drugs, the counter culture, and policies movements.

And you see it in the media. When the guy in Florida shot up the school the FBI came out and said they were familiar with the guy and had looked into him in the past. This is common with some radical Muslim people as well- where there are stories of being tracked by the FBI etc. Making things go boom is a special skill set that only a few have and can be used for unsavory activities. So it would greatly help if a crisis happened, some investigative organization could say well here’s a starting point of people we know who are capable of x or y that we can start with. Most of them haven’t done anything wrong, it’s just another tool.

There’s a data base of things like all the people who have access to planes. And tons of other random thing.

I was actually pleasantly surprised at how professional and safe the whole event was run.
I fully expected to see watermelons and all sorts of ‘things’ being blown up but that wasn’t what it was about at all. I guess getting hit with shrapnel, even if it is watermelon rind, still hurts and is stupid.

This was all about the art of fireworks shows, and yes, things that go bang as my first post showed. I would post all the night stuff but my pictures don’t do it justice.
