Is there a good spot in the DMS for staining and finishing wood projects?
No we don’t have a good spot for finishing, people have done it in the main workshop area, I’m assuming the fumes are just unpleasant and not actually harmful.
If you are doing anything with aerosols(spray paint or spray finishes) you must do it outside of the building. (there is one table with wheels that you could roll down the ramp and use outside)
Everyone should also complain to the board of directors that we don’t have a location designated for finishing or painting.
we would need an area to be dedicated to it. Are you offering the automotive area?
Can I offer 1/4 of metal shop or the pallet storage area (between machine shop and science)? Could probably find 200 sq ft there *
*as a potential hypothetical paint booth install location
How do you offer what you don’t control? If that’s a thing, I’d like to offer our neighbors building…
Sorry to @Adam for the off topic talk, but finishing has been a contested issue for some time, with no fully thought out proposal. So as Brandon said earlier, Aerosols should be done out back. Other things are fine in the warehouse but you might want to do it near a bay door with a fan if it’s really bad.
Probably don’t want to mix VOCs and sparks, but I may just be erring on the side of caution.
I want to offer, too that painting space is not something many folks have at home either. Sure you can do it in the garage, but you have to consider the risks associated with aerosol paint on everything in the garage even if the work is done in a home made paint booth.
Finishing, wood in particular, is a definite skill many of us would like to do better. DMS is severely limited without a space to do it.
I like using the autoshop space idea: Just kidding @Brandon_Green, but I do wish we could put our minds together and come up with a better solution than “take it outside”. When I park in the back I often worry about the potential errant paint spray.
My car already has over-spray from someone.
Seems like this falls in line with the paint booth debate. I would love to bring down my HVLP to spray finishes but without a booth it is not usable in a space like DMS. A booth of course poses a ton of challenges for a volunteer organization if the EPA shows up. We are probably not so good at following guidelines in the user must document it system when there could be 1000 users.
I will second Alex’s comment above. We don’t need any more proposals for spending money on booths, ventilation, etc. until we first see proposals on how we can realiably comply with regulations. How much paint of each type is used? If the required documentation is not complete and at a level of accuracy that satisfies the regulators the space could be shut down.
That’s what I figured. Thanks for the input everyone!
We’ve seen much discussion on the topic and some interesting ideas, but nothing seems to have gelled into a complete proposal with end-to-end ownership.
Sadly, this may come down to weigh in, and weigh out of all paint containers, rough density by material types, and locking the booth for the remainder of the year when we hit 49.5 gallons, along with a rule that anyone caught failing to log their finish shares responsibility personally with all other users who failed to log for any/all fines ando fees imposed for exceeding 50 gallons.
Questions I think need to be answered before we could make a go/no-go call:
- Environmental / Health / Safety: What kind of containment, personal protective setups, filtration, disposal, ventilation requirements would we have to meet?
- Regulatory : Above and beyond the above bullet, what kind of permitting, licensing, or compliance issues would we face? What kind of administrative / reporting requirements exist?
Other questions we need to ask once the above are answered:
- Financial : How do we pay for the booth itself? Installation? Maintenance?
- Operational : What committee is going to own this? What sort of paint booth is it? Where does it live? What are the procedures for usage?
In terms of the [X] gallons a year being the limit before more serious regulation/taxation is applied that was discussed in prior threads, I’m not sure that we have a definitive answer.
Would anyone be willing to volunteer to contact the relevant tceq personel as described in this post to try and get that information?

No way, Jose. I was working on the HAAS one day when someone was doing blowtorch+acrylic over in that area and I think I might have lost a few years of my life from the fumes.
TAKE IT OUTSIDE…
Noted. thanks for the feedback
If you take it outside, don’t get any paint on the concrete or wall. That is forbidden. I understand that there are big sheets of cardboard in the neighborhood of the laser cutters which may be laid on the concrete to catch overspray.
There was a small painting table outside at the loading dock until recently, but it had to be eliminated. I believe that the landlord objected to it.
Our temporary outdoor paint booth became a little too permanent for the landlord’s liking.
