Language is not static, it evolves. “Spend” as used in this context is often used in very reputable financial publications and magazines, for example the WSJ. This usage is both American and British. Is “That guy” the people that don’t recognize usage changes?
Merriam-Webster would disagree, and I agree with them. The WSJ is written by, and for, a bunch of MBAs, who drone on about mission statements.
Without opposition to change, there would be no balance, and we’d have to axe ourselfs what the hell happened to our language.
