Understandable, it can be made easily enough but unfortunately the laboratory hood isn’t operational.
If we had a operational fume hood, and pump for a fractional distillation setup I could make the fuming nitric acid for you.
I know we have the fractional distillation glassware and I think sulfuric acid. Just need a nitrate salt as far as reagents/glassware requirements go.
In regards to buying it, I’m sure you know that any vendor is going to charge the hazardous chemical shipping fee. For smaller quantities you can get around it but with 0.5L to 1L quantities I certainly don’t know any vendor that will do it.
I am asking because I had encountered similiar fees for Sulfuric Acid, yet the link that @Lampy provided above is shipping me a liter of 98% sulfuric for $12 + $10 shipping…
If they had what you needed, Prochem sells smaller amounts and shipping isn’t crazy. They cater to dyers, so its related chemicals. Most will be list under dye auxiliaries.
Univar might be a local source for large quantities of chemicals, and I do see nitric acid listed on the product sheet, but don’t know the cost and we would probably have to buy some minimum amount (55 gallon?)
I priced some alcohol by the drum from them years ago and the price seemed reasonable for what I was doing, but I can’t remember how much it was off hand.
So the items arrived yesterday. There was a hiccup. Their system allowed me to order potasium hydroxide and concentrated sulfuric acid with one shipping charge. They contacted me later to let me know the two chemicals could not be shipped together. Not surprising. Just needed to pay a seperate $10 shipping fee.
Talked with owner and confirmed that a single shipping charge will work for multiples of compatible chemicals, such as hydrochloric and sulfuric acids.
