Sound proofing the new studio

If that was what was planned, then that’s how it will be built.

I’ve sold a good bit of the Auralex stuff. Works great but is a bit expensive.
I wonder how long it will be before original Berger easter eggs are worth something

It was something the city said … see the link
It has emails I recieved from the city.

OK, thanks. Every city official has a different opinion of what our use category should be on our CO and that’s one thing we’re working to resolve.

Guess you could use the old EGG CARTON approach … LOL

I just finished making some acoustic panels and bass traps at DMS. They turned out very nice. I’d be happy to share the build process. Pictures to come…

Sure @grantf that would be awesome. What materials did you use?

Roxul rockboard 80 (acquired online, has a different name now) for the panels, rockwool safe n sound for the bass traps. Frames were made out of wood and I used cotton fabric to cover them. I’ll post pictures when I get home tonight.

Sounds exactly like the ones the Fire Marshal had us take down from the Lecture Hall. :frowning:

I was the person that walked around DMS with the Fire Marshall two years ago when he saw those thick curtains in Digital Media and the panels in the Lecture Room.

Any fabric, plastic, paper, or whatever type of wall coverings better have a UL Listed Fireproof label permanently attached to it. That’s the only way the Fire Marshall will approve it. He has to see that label. Home brewing something is not gonna make it. Otherwise you are wasting your time and money. Oh, you could home brew it but the Fire Marshall will want to see independent proof from a registered lab that it means the fire code, and that will cost big bucks! The closest Fire Rated Lab is in Chicago at the UL Headquarters. How do I know? I used to work for UL. Suggest you purchase the proper materials in the first place.

A large portion of my career was working with various Regulatory Agencies, I will be the one walking around with the Fire Marshall when that inspection day comes. Earlier today I spent my morning at Carrollton City Hall working with the City Code Inspectors doing a pre-approval meeting on our construction plans. Just trying to keep all our ducks in a row to make our move as seamless as possible. Please help us so we do not have any last minute surprises.

They actually were willing to accept a paper from the manufacturing stating the tested fire rating.

per https://talk.dallasmakerspace.org/t/sound-panels-in-digital-media-room/14285

Rock wool is fire proof insulation by nature, we just need to make sure the covers are fireproof

The Fire Marshal will not care if all the materials are fire proof. He wants to see a label that says the whole unit is certified as fire proof.

Just buy sound proofing that does the job and makes the Fire Marshal happy. It will be quicker/cheaper in the long run. As I said, we have been down this road before, why repeat it?

Perdue Acoustics make great stuff. They have a budget line also, Acoustics in a Box.

In college, I used to work with Sonny. https://sonnystraitstudios.com do you want me to ask him how he setup his studio? He, and some professionals, built it recently. I could probably make him take us around and show us the underpinnings.

Also, hit up @Adam_Oas this is within his wheelhouse.
