Soliciting advice on refinishing a table

I am hoping to sand down and refinish a nice wooden table which has seen better days before some frat guys spilled hookah coals on it leaving shallow char marks behind.

What is the best tool to quickly sand down the surface of a table? Is this something that would only be available in the woodshop? I haven’t taken the class yet. Could I work on the table top in the area just outside of the woodshop and in front of the automotive area?

Thanks for the advice!

I’m sure someone here has a better technique, but I have done it with a handheld belt sander. Followed by a orbital sander. Make sure it’s a solid wood table and not just veneer before you sand.

Thanks for the help. Can the orbital sander be used outside of the woodshop?

check with Andrew or someone but you could wheel the whole unit outside.
That would be the ideal setup for sanding something that will probably
create a good bit of dust.

If the festool unit is operating correctly, it will produce virtually no dust.

For initial sanding, the larger orbital Festool sander is the best we have for large flat surfaces.

I agree with Ryan, check carefully to seeif the surface is veneered first, and then examine the surface to see how thick the finish applied is. In some cases, with poly varnish, it saves time and sandpaper to strip the surfaces first before sanding.
