Social Media - Pinterest

I opened this under PR, but feel free to move it to another location…

@uglyknees mentioned the other day that she’s upping the game to expand awareness on social media. A quick search shows that there’s no formal DMS spot on Pinterest for all the DMS areas of making. If I put one together and shared the opportunity to add to it to all the members interested in working it, would I get myself into trouble?

I’m thinking a big board with smaller boards for each chaired area and then also special interest group boards. Boards would be shared to allow anyone with a Pinterest account to both share projects and pin ideas for future projects in that area. Dozens of people, in theory, would be managing the Pinterest boards. Control would not be centered in any one place.

Let me know what you think. I could have it done and hopefully humming within a couple of weeks. Critical to the idea are people with Pinterest accounts who would like to participate. A bonus to this effort (besides drooling over good ideas) is the potential for marketing DMS to other makers in the area who might like what they see.

PR is the correct category. Thanks!

I have created a business account for Dallas Makerspace on Pinterest. Here’s the URL:

I would not allow me to use “dallasmakerspace” for the username because it had too many characters, so I went with dallasmakers, like we have on Twitter.

I added our logo, a brief description, and the URL to our main page (https://dallasmakerspace.org).

NOTE: On public social media accounts, etc… We prefer to have “Dallas Makerspace” spelled out - especially at the top/beginning of any type of resource, etc… Thanks!

I will send you a PM with the login information. It appears appears that unlike Facebook and Google+, there are no options for multiple ‘staff’ accounts to be directly associated with it, so anyone who helps you with it will have to share the same login credentials. Please only share the login credentials with active members and be sure to let Infrastructure know if the password must be changed for any reason, so we can keep a record of the current password at all times.

Got it! Thank you. I believe (and I’ll play around with it this morning) that at the bottom of each board you can grant permission by Pinterest user login (aka “name”) to people who will collaborate on that board, so that’s how it’s shared…not by account, but by pinning board created.

So you and I have the account login - will you send that information on to PR like it was suggested or should I?

A post to CA Facebook found three more people who want to play. Pinterest is fun, y’all!

I have a personal Pinterest account; but, I’ve never created a board (or even “pinned” anything) before, so that’s probably why I didn’t see that option ~ lol! Though recently I’ve been thinking about poking around with it a bit for sublimation stuff and all… Thanks for the 411 :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I do quite a bit for both Infrastructure and PR, so I’ll make sure that the current login credentials are documented. Just going forward, if something happens and the password needs to be changed, please notify Infrastructure (and PR if you want to do both ~ as long as Infrastructure knows so we can update the info on our records…).

Thanks again! :dms:

Well when you are blurry eyed at 2 a.m. looking for just one more idea on how to make a tissue paper flower, please don’t remember that I told you how much fun Pinterest can be.

At 2 AM, I’m in the prime time of my “day”. I’m just now fixin to go to bed “for the ‘night’”… Hehe

But, noted. Thx LOL

I don’t even remember how long ago I created my personal account, but it seems like it was a while ago… I imagine that I clicked a link from a Google search or that someone shared on Facebook, I’m sure… and “had” to create an account to check out the link… Since I’ve been trying to learn more about sublimation in the past couple few months, and more recently have joined a few Facebook groups for sublimation, I very recently have had little urges to actually use the account to keep track of the kewl stuff people keep sharing ~ lollollol :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I’m an obsessive compulsive pinner (seriously an issue people) let me know if I can help.

I have no doubt that you would have a lot to offer, Thanks! I’ll defer to Cindy on how the boards will be set up and managed 'n all…

Ok, good people, if you will PM me the email address associated with your Pinterest account (if you sign on with FB or Google+, then I think it’s the email associated with that account) and the boards you want to play on, I can invite you to collaborate.

Oh! And if a DMS area wants a board made, just leave a note here and I’ll add it. The first few weeks will require this kind of intervention, but after enough collaborators are added, there probably won’t be much of a need to sign in under the main credentials.

Let the pinning begin. I’ve already put up the leather bag I’ve been drooling over and added a Dye Sublimation board.

Some boards to consider…

  • Laser cut (or laser cutting and engraving? )
  • 3D Printing
  • Arduino projects
  • STEM/STEAM ideas
  • maybe one for each active interest group??

Hey @Committee_Chairs ~ if you and/or anyone in your committee is into Pinterest and y’all want a special board under the shiny new Dallas Makerspace Pinterest, please review the posts in this thread and let Cindy (@clk75201) know! Thx!!

Let’s say anyone can request a board, but when you do, you need to agree to be a collaborator on that board.

And…

Just in case you have no idea what’s going on here, you don’t need an Pinterest account to watch it happen. Just go to: https://www.pinterest.com/dallasmakers/

How are we going to handle someone other than a project creator posting someone else’s work? How are we going to handle attribution and credit? Are we going to watermark or otherwise mark photos?

If I post my work to TALK, even though it’s nominally searchable from the outside, it doesn’t mean I’d necessarily like it posted to Pinterest.

I seem to recall @MellissaRhodes asking permission when she posted our work to the blog (or some such other place).

EDIT: And BTW, when I do post work, I don’t use my full name because I personally seek a small digital footprint - so assuming someone wants their real name for attribution might not be accurate either.

You have control over adding anything that you do. Pinterest isn’t a member showcase unless you want to showcase your work.

It’s a method to generate ideas to try at DMS. Maybe people who agree to have their stuff included in the blog show and tell will want to put a few things up? Again, complete control by the maker. No overlap at all with TALK posts.

I like this idea, and think it’s definitely worth creating. Social media presence is a great opportunity to spread what and all can be done at the space.

Awesome, this is great!

Based on the information from your pinterest link on the other topic, I created a board “Miniatures” and sent an invitation for you to collaborate (add stuff to) that board using the Pinterest ID from your first uploads.

IF YOU WANT to add those pics to the DMS Miniatures board, that will be your decision. If you don’t, I’ll remove the board in a couple of weeks. You could also sign in and search around and add mini projects that you’re wanting to try, or tools you are wanting to purchase… it’s an idea board for all kinds of things.

Is that comfortable enough as far as control @John_Marlow?

I think to keep it easy, I’ll say that if an interest group, etc., puts a name forward as to who will collaborate (add to) that board, that’s when I’ll make the new board. That way we don’t have a ton of empty boards to start.

It’s not that I’m worried about my stuff. I dream of the day that my stuff is good enough for someone else to want to copy!

I was asking the question in general and using myself as an example.

As long as people post their own stuff, then each person is responsible for whatever they want for attribution, etc.

That’s basically the question I was asking.

I get the feeling that most of the content on Pinterest is collections of links to things people want to try… Sort of like public bookmarks that remind you to go back to look again, while sharing what you find interesting with anyone else who has similar interests… I think.
