Signs for each classroom

For me, TALK is weird about replies. My apologies.

I would say, “talk with Stan”. As infrastructure is his baby.

I appreciate you rooting around the ceiling. Those tablets look beautiful powered up. Nice clean installation. Thank you.

I was by the maker space last week and saw a good number of people asking each other where each room was. I feel like minimal signage alone would really increase how serious / professional the space looks to anyone walking in.

I would go vigilante and make them on my own but social cues tell me to thread bump this.

Good plan. While volunteer effort is always appreciated, we haven’t decided what to name the rooms yet … and we have some new rooms, too. So right now it’s all in limbo. For the time being, people will have to resort to using the map on the front bulletin board.

And non-members are supposed to be escorted in, so it’s only new members who should be confused.

For now “You are here” maps in cheap picture frames with the existing classrooms. The focused layout from the expansion plans could be printed and are easily changed when needed and frames re-purposed when something better comes along.

Recommend keeping the suite numbers - 102 and 104 in what ever naming scheme we go with. That way you know at least which half of DMS to go to.

The distinction of 102 vs. 104 really only affects us old-timers. Over time that will diminish and people won’t make that distinction. There is only one classroom on the north side anyway - only the new Lobby classroom. Everything else is on the south side.

As a new member, I’d like to toss in my two cents.

Apparently, new members are supposed to magically have all-encompassing knowledge imparted upon them with receipt of their keycard. Sadly, i must have gone to the restroom when this cloud was released, because i missed it. And since the Psychic Friends Network went out of business years ago, I’m unable to devine the answers through those channels.

So, for me, not having ANYTHING posted on classrooms or DMS spaces used as classrooms marked is frustrating.

What about something attached with magnets to the steel doorframes? Or what i did for temporary signage when my employers were moving into a new facility?

Basically a page protector with post-it note type adhesive on the back.
No permanent damage to anything while all the new space prep takes place, then you can implement a more permanent solution, but not leave newbies interrupting activities trying to find the right room.

It’s gotten easier since Chris added this page to the wiki

But not as good as the NASA stripes on the walls we had when I started…

You’re right that we do need to label classrooms in some way. We’re all pretty much in agreement that the classrooms should be labeled, although we disagree on the right way to do it

I think the momentum to do that stalled once we started the Expansion effort - some of the former classrooms won’t be classrooms any more and some new rooms will become classrooms.

Add to that the fact that I’m not sure we’ve officially named the future classrooms. I’ve been unofficially calling them the Orange Classroom (currently 3D fab), Blue classroom (currently galley), Pillar North (north end of CA), Pillar South (south end of CA), and Lobby classroom (Suite 102 lobby) because we needed something to put on the blueprints.

The sign suggestion I personally like is folded acrylic signs near the ceiling, with vinyl lettering and possibly backlit. Since those stick out from the wall, they are easier to read from down a hallway, and from either side. An example of that can be seen in the galley - there is some kind of a fire extinguisher or first aid kit sign mounted on the west wall.

Having said all that, these are all decisions for the Education committee to make. I would ask, however, that anything going on walls be coordinated with Expansion to make sure it won’t have to come down again during construction.

In the meantime, we just use the safety equipment maps that are posted throughout the building because they show all the classrooms.

When I posted this almost a year ago I assumed someone would tell me to just “doocracy it” and every few months there’s a reply to this thread from a new member who understands why I made the OP.

So now that it’s been this long and I’m out of fucks to give I’m inclined to just make some tasteful decals, mount them on each doorway and face the music if anyone has some ACTUAL beef with this idea.

The way I see it, vinyl is easy to peel off when you need to paint over it.

EDIT: I posted this drunkenly at 1 am before reading Chris’s reply. I agree that this action should be sanctioned by the relevant committee

The acrylic signs stick out from the wall is a simple idea. They would be better with internal LED lighting. It would also mean if a room changes purposes it is not a repaint.

As a secondary option which you would say
“Wow isn’t this cool” version is a phone app that knows where you are and where you want to go AND will guide you there. The issue is geo-location is lousy with GPS, it is about a 10 yard granularity. It has to be some other technology that allows geometry calculations from multiple beacons. This technology is still maturing. It will happen.

@talkers says he is (eventually) going to make some acrylic signs that go behind the classroom data pads that will be backlit with LEDs.

Will committee areas still be listed as a classroom choice after all the dust settles?

Buuuuuuttt. …
Why cant there be something TEMPORARY in the meantime? Hell. Post-notes on the wall would be better than nothing. Or @tombakerftw’s vinyl-cut letters adhered to clear acetate and tacked to the wall?
