Show-Me Rally 2020

I spent last weekend volunteering at the Show-Me rally race in Missouri. I would very much recommend it to any of my fellow DMS motorsports fans. It’s a great way to get an up-close and personal view of the race. I was a radio operator but there’s also plenty of demand for course marshals if you don’t have a ham license.

We used to have some Tulip/Timed rallies in Flower Mound. It was more about figuring out the course directions and staying on time. But who doesn’t love a car blitzing through the woods at WFO.

Way back in the 70’s, I hung out with the car group in Huntsville AL at my co-op job. One of the guys did a thing called Pro Rally. Dead of night, so all the high-beam lights, through the mountains. Fastest time wins.

Timed/trap rallies can be a lot of fun, too.

The cool think about Flower Mound in the early 80’s was there were massive grids of farm roads and few homes. You were always passing other teams at intersections going the other way. You really had to have confidence in your navigator that they ware reading the tulip map correctly. The organizers also would have check-in stops on both sides of the road making the route extra confusing. We must have looked like a bunch of ants going every which way. Massive fun, so wish we could do that again. Might have to move further out now like Prosper.

I wish we had stage rally a bit closer, but a time/distance rally could be fun, particularly if you did it in a cool car.

They actually use tulip notes in a lot of the one-day regional rallies, as a baseline for the co-driver’s notes. Show-Me this year was a two-day national event, so they didn’t provide any notes, the teams are allowed to drive the stages twice, at the speed limit, to get their notes put together.

My Scoutmaster was big into Rally’s and told me they are Time/Distance Rallys or TSD.

We won some trophy but I do not remember what for. No it was before participation trophies!

Would love to participate in one again.

Edit: there is one in Ana Texas next weekend!
