Show and Tell April 2025

Please post a picture & description in this thread of anything you are working on this month at the 'Space.

Projects happen at DMS happen all the time, but most of our fellow members don’t get to see our cool stuff! Post here to share the interesting things we are doing @ Dallas Makerspace this month!
:heavy_check_mark: small craft project
:heavy_check_mark: large CNC router project
:heavy_check_mark: building a table
:heavy_check_mark: 3D printing a cosplay prop

and so much more!

Posting here helps not only promote Dallas Makerspace, but could inspire others to make something. This also helps PR enrich social media content in our blog, Instagram, TikTok, or other social media (with attribution to each maker of course).

:bulb: NOTE: Please try to include the following on each post, to help make for better social media content!

  • a QUALITY photo
  • a note about WHAT you’ve made
  • WHO you are (for attribution)
  • HOW you’ve made it

Here are 2 pens I made using acrylic on the Sherline lathe. The process took longer than doing so on a wood lathe but came out very well.

These are lovely! How was acrylic to use compared to a wooden pen blank?

I keep seeing these amazing resin abalone blocks that seem to be calling me to turn into a calligraphy pen. :slightly_smiling_face:

Acrylic is much more brittle than wood when turning. It can shatter if you push too hard or use dull tools on a wood lathe. It turns very well on the Sherline lathe over in the machine shop but takes longer. Also you can’t use wood on the Sherline lathe.

Turning acrylic on a wood lathe requires sharp tools and speed is your friend. Make sure to turn up the speed to 3000+ RPMs. Also there is a longer finishing process to get it very shiny like I did.

Took the end grain cutting board class and love, love, love my board. HB is the absolute best at teaching all of the best methods in achieving a very detailed, high end board. Would recommend this class to everybody!

Acrylic gets hot and melty from friction when turned so it can catch more than wood, but overall its lack of grain makes it easier to turn in my opinion. I’d like to make my own blanks sometime but it’s way down on the to-play list.

Greeting cards using the Silhouette Cameo. Wanted to practice with the machine after taking the Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV) class.

While visiting multiple JoAnn stores in three states, I decided to try counted cross stitch again. I picked up some basic kits, some advanced kits, some books, some floss, lots of needles, several hoops, and anything else that seemed related. (NO, I don’t overdo things; just don’t ask how many Perler beads I have.)

Finished my first project last night. I forgot how relaxing and irritating cross stitch can be. I did have fun, and look forward to my next project.

Beautiful work. Do you have any formal cabinet making experience? Have you made a lot of different cabinets? Where did you cut your parts? DMS? What wood did you use? Birch, Oak, something else?

Thanks for posting the pics. You daughter is very fortunate.

It’s cabinet grade ply, birch. I am mostly self taught, although if you spend any time around Burt and HB, you can’t help but pick up alot of significant wisdom.

I made a cabinet for my nephew last year but it was much different.

I cut the parts at Dms, loaded them into my van and installed it all in San Antonio. The 11’ countertop had to be assembled and cleaned up on sight. That was the biggest challenge.

Thanks for asking!

I built a llama chute for a friend of my daughter. The chute is designed to help safely constrain the llama for medicating, trimming, etc.

The budget was roughly zero dollars, so I had to make do with some weathered wood on hand for some of the planking.

Greetings from Plano Not Your Mama’s Quilt Store stash fest on Saturday, Apr 12. Here is our table booth, put up single handed by Amelia. Soul and Irving came by and helped hand out brochures and answer questions. Amelia worked her magic on the treadle sewing machine and had denim coasters to hand out to any folks who donated to the Hearts on Fire for California fundraiser. There was a good crowd at the stash fest and many did stop to ask about the quilt, donate, sign the backing, and talk about the treadle sewing machine.

We will have a meeting on Tuesday, Apr 15 at 6:30pm to finalize plans for this coming Saturday, Apr19, at Coppell Farmers Market. Come join us!
