Should DMS adopt an opt-in privacy policy?

You don’t always need to hack the phone itself depending on the applications installed. You could for example just break their iCloud password and use the built in find my phone functionality. I mean, we’ve all seen how secure iCloud is right?

If anyone at DMS cracks my iCloud account to spam me about DMS board elections, they are DEFINITELY not getting my vote.

Google searches for public information aren’t “datamining.”

(source: I do datamining for a living)

I can access the GPS records of everyone’s phone at DMS if I want to spend the $$$. I have done work for various government agencies developing transportation models where we have purchase, commercially, the cell phone data for every cell phone within their geographic area. The companies selling you this data claim they strip it of ‘identifying’ information; however, just the location can prove identifying.

I argued this with a client who had used this data, and wanted to expand its use. Since I knew a place where he was regularly, his office, it didn’t take more then a day of data mining to identify his home, where his kids went to school, etc… When I showed him this, he changed his mind about expanding the use of the data. The company in question, claims to have made my little hack impossible, with increased data security. The problem is that in order to make the data useful to clients like us, they need to have some identifying value that shows the records for a specific individual, even if they have removed all identifying information about that individual. That means, the data can be used to pull out an individuals information, as long as you have other information about the person. For the makerspace, if I simply paid attention to when you were at the space, I could identify you in those records, with just a few such observation.

Google searches are also less effective for people who don’t have unique names. For example, there are a grand total of 4 people with the last name LeCody currently alive today.

No, and I never claimed they were. Data mining would be extracting the information from those ‘public’ pages and then seeking correlations with other such pages and keywords to extract all kinds of information. As someone who does this, then you know just how much information people put out there.

Yes, which only means it slows the process down.

Whereas there’s enough people with my first and last names that we could start a club and have a fairly large cruise every year.

That seems like even more reason for you not to be able to get my home address if you could use it to identify me in any GPS records that you have access to.

Currently, that is all the BoD feels obligated to disclose pursuant to the statute, not emails.

I’m the complete opposite… If someone goes to that level of hassle, they deserve the job.

We could just encourage people to put the DMS address and phone number as their contact info. Since we are apparently okay with people basically living at the space, why would we frown on members using the address for contact info but not being there 22/7

Interesting you say that. We had someone’s court summons show up yesterday. It was addressed to DMS.

Don’t make finance process your mail! Unless you start to have checks made out to the finance team. We already get too many magazines. I’m expecting we will start to get porn any day now.

Well considering I have a real address, you’d only get DMS related stuff. Because presumably they would be trying to mail things out to campaign. Or fund raise for a lawsuit? Or other fishy stuff I guess

Often times when myself or other Procurement Officers order items and they are shipped to DMS, the name on items appears as the persons name that was used on the credit card. The packing slips will give all the other details, such as Machine Shop, Creative Arts, etc.

Since members are not to use DMS for any personal business or mail, all mail that comes in is presumed to be DMS business. Often members that are not Procurement Officers purchase items for DMS, are shipped to DMS, and then will submit for reimbursement. This is perfectly fine as this DMS business.

Just for clarity, Texas law requires that each member opt-in, and the consent must specify the info to be released, and it must be in writing, to release protected data.

There are a few people wishing very much for you to forget that the law limits disclosure, instead focusing the discussion on bylaws, or rules. But this has nothing to do with either. The only discussion available, is what we do that the law allows.

Sec. 521.051. UNAUTHORIZED USE OR POSSESSION OF PERSONAL IDENTIFYING INFORMATION. (a) A person may not obtain, possess, transfer, or use personal identifying information of another person without the other person’s consent AND with intent to obtain a good, a service, insurance, an extension of credit, or any other thing of value in the other person’s name.

It’s easy to miss, but it has been pointed out that the AND in the above is a critical point in this controversy. The word “AND” makes the first part of the sentence true on condition of the second part also being true, insuring that the information is illegal to use, but only if you intend to obtain something of value in another person’s name.

If you’re not an identify thief, and intend to use the information for some proper purpose, like discussing general business among fellow members of your own organization, then it’s business as usual and nobody goes to jail. If you are an identify thief, and you use the information to obtain something of value in another person’s name, you will probably go to jail.

You shouldn’t take my word for it though. Think, read, and learn the truth for yourself.

Don’t be a customer. Be a member of Dallas Makerspace.

People ‘Live’ at the space??.. Really? Where do they shower/clean up?

Is DMS charging rent and utilities at least?

They don’t.

It’s $50 a month for rent apparently.

Haha … more likely the $35/month… :sunglasses:
