Sherline Lathe is downgraded

Someone took the locking knob off the tail stock and it is nowhere to be found. this prevents the live center from working. I think it’s a size 8, but i’m unsure of the pitch. The 8-32 does not go in and is all I found in the shop. Until that can be fixed it is not usable except for the headstock.

I don’t believe we have any 8-24. I want to say I had to buy some the last time. Maybe I will have time tomorrow.

I’ll measure it on mine tomorrow and post, but most of the threaded components on the Sherlines use #10-32 threads.

It is definitely not 10-32. I tried.

Here are the dimension. Very strange that they went with #10-24

Anyway he is a picture of the part with dimensions

This could be used to machine a temporary replacement, but I suggest picking up a few replacements from Sherline

40870 Tailstock spindle locking screw, $1.44
40860 Tailstock locking screw lock grommet, $1.50

BTW, these fall out very easily if they are loosened only a turn or two too much, so picking up a few replacements would be a good idea, @nicksilva

any shot you could groove and o-ring the inside shoulder so it’d be less likely to fall out when loose?
how about attaching it to the bench with a wire/chain?
(None of these sound like good ideas, but neither does losing a dozen or so of them a year, even when that cheap, so just tossing some ideas out…)

I wouldn’t, there is not a lot of material there, and a replacement tail stock would be necessary if we went too far. Might be worth using a pair of magnets with some string/wire between them to ‘attach’ it to the bed of the lathe so, it it falls out it doesn’t roll away.

But these are cheap, and it wouldn’t cost much to keep a few in stock

The grommets are this type, and could be purchased for much less then Sherline Charges for them

I meant groove the end of the screw for an o-ring, but your point stands, and I certainly bow to “you un’s” superior knowledge of this device.

I like the idea of magnetically “attaching” it…

If you would like, I can loan my part to get the Sherline back up to %100 until the replacement comes in.

That’s VERY kind of you. I personally don’t have any other S-lathe classes scheduled thru August other than perhaps a ‘teach the teachers’ class, so until someone schedules a class everyone will just have to hold the drill chuck so it doesn’t spin. thanks.

@John_Marlow I know you said you were planning on teaching lathe classes. Let me know when, and if we haven’t gotten a replacement by then I will bring in the parts needed to get this fully functional.
