Sheet Metal Brake Press

Hi - I’m new to the space and am interested in using a brake press to form some 18-gauge sheet metal. I’m converting a school bus into an RV, and I am deleting (10) of the windows. I’ve pulled the windows out, and am looking to fill them in with sheet metal I can attach to the frame. Ultimately, I’m trying to make (10) 24" x 27" x 1" boxes without a lid. Can someone confirm whether or not the Baileigh Magnetic Brake (listed on the site’s wiki) is functional and capable of putting a 90-degree bend across a max dimension of ~29"?

Thanks!

Yes it can. We even have a corner notcher in Machine shop that will make the bends easier to fold.

hey @bradblanch !

I had replied to your email shortly ago and see you posted here as well.

@TBJK 's option of the corner notcher is probably better than butting every sheet on the dynatorch for getting cleanest results if you cut them with the shear as well

@hon1nbo thanks for your email! Does the “corner notcher” @TBJK require any training/classes before operating? I’m trying to get this project completed in the next few weeks and if I have to - I can cut the corner notches with my angle grinder (or metal chop saw). Really appreciate both of your responses!

Like most unpowered devices in that area, it does not. We only ask that

  • you have the usual PPE
  • if you’re unsure of something don’t be afraid to ask first.
  • if something breaks let us know. We’re a learning environment and things happen, but we need to know about breakages so we can work on the equipment.
