Shapeoko training

As discussed in this post I’m considering using the Shapeoko for some engraving, but discovered it has a sign indicating training is required. Can anyone point me in the right direction for who to contact regarding said training, if that is still a requirement?

Thanks!

Have you figured out how you’re going to securely hold the die?

Yes; I’ll be fabricating a workholding fixture; essentially two boards with pentagons cut out, sized to allow the die to protrude partially. The die will be sandwiched between the two boards (with the flat face being engraved protruding above the top board), and those two boards will be clamped together, then clamped down to the bed or a sacrificial board as appropriate. I may not be describing well, but once I’ve confirmed whether I’m using the Shapeoko, laser, or some other engraving mechanism to finalize the workholding requirements I’ll be mocking something up that may help visually explain

Much appreciated, John! I can stop by tonight - around what times will you be there?

John, Thanks for letting me sit in on this training! The software I menioned is called chilippr and this is the link

Hi John,

I’m curious if you’re available to go through the Shapeoko at some point with me. I’ve done CNC routing before although am not signed off on the big one yet. I have to make a small plaque in the next week or so.

To start, a few questions:

  1. does it allow for much 3-D detail, or is it a simple up/down setup?
  2. what do we use to create the g-code that it uses?
2a) is this available on the jump server?
  3. if not on the jump server, what format does it need to be in to import into the g-code software (assuming .stl)

Thanks
Ian

+1 for Shapeoko runthrough at the trainer’s weeknight/weekend convenience.
