Shapeoko progress

Walter, it looked as though the powersupply was still hooked up, so we should be ok there. However i’m not sure if it was only powering the mill, or powered the electronics also

I will be at the space Wednesday evening and can leave an Arduino with grbl on the shapeko cabinet that you’ll can use to get the project finished, then you can replace them and get them back to me. Okay? @uglyknees @artnerdray

Walter, could you put them inside the black tote, underneath, if i’m not there.

I’ll try and get to the space also on Wednesday evening.

Nope, no red box.
[/quote]The midnight bandit strikes again! I’m planning on attending a class on Wednesday evening and will take a look and see if there’s any other damage and perhaps some repairs.

I’d put a note on the Wiki page last year that we could use a GRBL version bump, guess we’ll get that now  It’s also a good time to do some cleaning, adjusting and any optional upgrades involving wiring. E.G. the “pull the adapter plug” is functional for emergency stops but does anyone have an E-Stop button we could wire in? That would be nice.

There was one on the skeleton of the 3d printer we put on the donation shelf yesterday. If someone could grab that and put it with the shapeko, that would be great; however if it is gone, I have several so could bring one in with the controller on Wednesday.

Yeah thats my plan also. When I get the enclosure design settled i’ll need to re position the whole machine more centrally on the work surface. We can probably move all of the electronics to the backside, out of the way.

If nothing else it will be a great lesson in how to calibrate and level a CNC machine

OK…y’all tell me. Will the Shapeoko be able to do this?

…sorry, tried to embed all fancy-time like Walter, but alas…

It should be given the right cutters and engraving bits.

COOLNESS!!! I heat the stamp and use my arbor press to get an impression in the leather instead of just a burn. I’m SO thrilled at the progress being made on this thing. I’d love to watch/help when y’all get ready to install the new controller components. I know NOTHING about that and it would be great to see that process in action.

What was decided about dust/debris collection?

I’ve also seen some brush boots on Shapeoko and X-Carve machines (bought & homemade)…is that something we would want/need?

Talking with a few other folks, we may just have a couple of 4" 115V fans mounted on one side that just blows the surface clean as it cuts, then use a small brush to sweep it out off the other side when done. There should be a lot of debris because there isn’t a lot volume. This keeps it simple, quiet, and uncomplicated while allowing the item being worked on to be seen clearly.

Remember to send me the links to anything I need to get. I leave on the 8th so time is important.

Neat! I had come across this and a few of the Shapeoko videos I’ve watched used them, but most of those did not have an enclosure. http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/Dust_Shoe

Updates: After some prep work and cleaning yesterday the machine electronics and wiring were restored for testing today and passed; everything is working including the variable speed spindle controller. I put a new sign on the machine outlining some of this and _noting it’s not ready for use ye_t; next up is the enclosure.

The team is aiming for usability and deferring all but the most critical upgrades. We seem to generally agree that for day one we want the enclosure for the table, one for the electronics, an E-Stop and power switch wired in and easily accessible plus a fan or two for cooling and airflow to direct debris. After that next up is I think limit switches to help prevent damage from what we hope are numerous new users

Given everyone’s schedules I’d suggest we’re aiming to have it back in service as outlined by mid June.

Wow!! I saw the life-size mock-up for the enclosure and it’s looking great! It’s exciting seeing the progress on this project. Big thanks to everyone for your efforts on getting this baby going!

I have the actual wood cut now, ready to go. Hopefully it is still stacked on the cart to the right of the shapeoko.

Hoping to get to the space tonight to work on actually constructing.

Also need to find something like a base to cover the large hole left by router. (Unless we want to utilise this as an exhaust of sorts for wood dust?)

Yes, the wood cuts were there last night. THANKS for all your time & hard work!
