Setting up DMS multi node BBS

@mrhavens and I had a good conversation about setting up a BBS for DMS.

I would like to see us get the real experience for it.

I think it should include:

  • Use real DOS based BBS software that might have been used back when BBSes were popular
  • Web based terminal for people wanting to access it
  • Door Games
  • DosBOX on a VM should work
  • WWIV has a config for doing something similar ( http://docs.wwivbbs.org/en/wwiv51/ )
  • Write a Talk Door for posting on Talk from the BBS
  • Some good ANSI Color Artwork

WWIV apparently compiles under Linux ā€¦ so we might want to use that and DOSBox for Doors

We have one already, BBS.dapla.net. it runs mystic bbs has fidonet access, gopher, Usenet and a whole host of other things.
Check it out and we can even do a few classes on this one.

I would like the fun of setting one up and Mark has run WWIV before back when it was run in the 80s/90s.

Cool, that makes for a great project for setting up netmail and fidonet style echos.

Think we could turn it into a class?

I didnā€™t mean to start a spamming of Talk about BBSes series ā€¦ one thread is quite enough IMO

This was a bit of documentation thatā€™s been in the wings for a while. I was planning on releasing it later on the weekend when it got polished but your post reminded me that itā€™s best to get it out right away before some other fire comes along.

Gotcha ā€¦ wouldnā€™t the wiki be a better place for it, if it is just information and not a conversation?

its there and no one reads the wiki.

Besides, none of this means Mystic is the only board software out there. Just documenting one of the project @Team_VCC has been running since the inception of the committee.

Now, If people want to run a class on setting up other board code bases then Iā€™d love for us to get that on the calendar.

That differs from your posts. And I wouldnā€™t say noone reads the wiki. You could make a Mystic BBS section with other parts. Iā€™m sure people on the web would be happy to have it, if not people here.

For the naysayers:

Hereā€™s the wiki category for BBS articles. Lets get it populated with some great items. Best articles will get added to the zine and show cased on youtube.

This technically has nothing to do with anything, but am enjoying the BBS discussion.

They have a fond place in my heart. I met my husband on one 23 years ago, when BBSs roamed the earth

If asked how we met, itā€™s easier to gloss over things and just say ā€œthe Internetā€ since saying ā€œa BBSā€ usually causes a confused look. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think you captured why we want to set one up and use it . So many good memories. I helped run one back in the day and played games and talked with people in my area that I could go out and meet. We all have a sghtly different reason but really it is all about the good memories.

@Draco take a look at these for your BBS door idea

Code example for displaying rss on mystic as a door:

wouldnā€™t be too hard to convert that over to use the pydiscourse module.
