Seeking recommendation for oil-based stain

I need a brand recommendation for a wipe-off oil-based (semi-transparent) wood stain.

  • base material is oak
  • interior use
  • I plan to use WaterLox over it.

My go-to brand would have been General Finishes but they don’t make any colors close to what I’m looking for. I am unwilling to mix; either stain or aniline dye. I am also unwilling to consider water-based stain.

Not that it matters, but I’m looking for some sort of medium brown. It doesn’t seem like this would be too exotic but apparently it is.

All suggestions appreciated.

MinWax is what I usually use. While apparently you do have to watch which version you buy, they do have an oil-based version. The “honey oil-based” looks like a nice brown. I was looking on Ace’s website, and I’d probably go to one of the big box stores for price.

I have generally used MinWax. It has been good for when I have used it. In my last wood project I used a MinWax stain called Early American. Depending on the type of wood and grain it can be a bit darker or lighter. I was using on Popular wood. And a light grain turned out light however where the grain was a bit darker it was close to that darkness you had in picture. You can check it out when I posted a photo of it on Talk.

I am also trying to think of the one I used a few years ago when I refinished my kitchen table. That turned out to be a good darker stain. The shine on top is because I put on 2 part apoxy table top coat.
