Sawing Plastic At DMS

There’s now a 12" saw blade for the miter saw in the wood shop that’s designed for cutting plastics. It requires swapping blade of course and cleaning up after yourself but it’s worth the effort. It works awesome. Please don’t use it to cut anything else other than plastic! If you’d like a hand swapping blades or a quick lesson on how to do it I’d be happy to help.

I have observed the quality of the work and it is indeed impressive.

I wish you luck in keeping that blade for use only on plastic if it is left out for general access, no
matter how well you label it.

Hang it on the wall under a sign saying, “For plastics only.”

Oooh, looks like mad science.

That sounds (to me) like a really good idea. Isn’t there also a table saw blade for plastics only? It might be good to keep all the “plastics only” tools in one (well-labeled) place in there.

I’m with @hardsuit. and the reverse is true - I’m sure the current wood one will be eating some plastic sooner or later.
Personally, I use a combination blade in my table saw and cut hard woods and plastic all day long. No swapping. No problems.

Ripping hardwoods and cutting plastic don’t go together.

so the purpose of the combination blades is what?
never mind. I give up

A combination blade is a compromise of rip and crosscut.

The biggest issue with sharing blades with plastic is that it is so easy to have plastic contamination on the blade transfer to the wood and burn.

thank you @kbraby. they of course are also called a multi-purpose blades and can in fact cut multiple materials. I accept the contamination explanation although I have not run into it myself. cheers!
