Rookie Metal Shop Question

I’m new to the Space ad have a question about the Metal shop. I’ve got a woodworking project underway (coffee table) and need to do some simple metal work for the edging. I need to cut some angle iron to length and notch a couple of the ends. I also need to drill a series of holes in the angle iron as well. A band saw and drill press should do the job.

  1. Does the machine shop have both these tools (from the tool status list it appears so but I’m looking to confirm. I live a distance form the Space so it’s not easy for me to just stop by and check it out).

  2. Are there any prerequisite classes to use these tools if they are indeed part of shop.

Thanks in advance,
-Tim

No training is currently required for either. However if you want to use the coldsaw that’s a different story.

The Machine Shop’s vertical band saw is out of order. There is a horizontal band saw in the Metal Shop and I think a chop saw.

If you haven’t used those machines before please do ask for some help. Even though training isn’t required things like blades are so easily wrecked by not knowing. We like to help people learn and this helps keep machines in service!

PM me for when you can be at the Space. I’ll teach you how to use Cold Cut saw and metal bands saws. I’ll be here Monday and Tuesday from say 1:00Pm till I start teaching classes at 7PM

Thanks for the help everyone. I’m going to meet up with David this evening. Appreciate the advice!

I told Tim I’d training him on the Cold Cut Saw this on Monday evening - I’ll do this at 6Pm, Anyone that wants to learn be at the saw at 6PM. Usually takes about about 15-20 min if small group.

I’m going to piggy back on this and ask if anyone knows of any TIG class or training coming up. I have a project coming up that requires me to learn to use a welder and not kill myself doing it.
