Repair Existing or Fabricate New Leadscrew?

I would not use Stainless since it galls really easily.

I took mine apart. and have pictures . All was as I suspected handle was 2 piece.
with a pressed on cap.My finger has not been calibrated but measured to be about 3/4 -inch wide.
I have a picture. I found that my lead screw was broken on the end that goes against the vice jaw. I will need to fix that . I may Tool Time it. ( make it better ) I guess I won’t use stainless.
I squeezed the threaded cap in a vice . Tapped down, using a brass bar on the edge of the bottom cap. The cap came off pretty easy. I used the small pliers to unscrew the cap on the lead screw.
