Still classic:
I was a contributor to the computer age. I didn’t invent the internet but I was one of its pioneers, as Convex computer depended upon it for sharing computational resources. I was also a member of the TCP/IP committee at Interop for a while.
As a computer scientist and software developer of operating systems, network protocols and super computers I can relate to the usefulness of computers, but also to their intrusion into every aspect of our lives. I still think “in person” communication is the best way to convey thoughts even though there are a plethora of non-verbal means to communicate. (70% of communication in person is non verbal)
Here’s two or three misnomers I heard over the years. I’m sure you can all come up with more:
- We will never need more than 640K of memory.
- Computers will do away with the need for paper
- Computers will simplify our life so much we will have an overabundance of free time.
But like they say, “The computer business has been “berry berry” good to me.” I was the beneficiary of several ISO and ESOP plans, profit sharing and great benefits as well as top pay for years. The most important aspect of software development though is the tremendous fun I’ve had along the way. I thought at times, “I’d do this work for free because it was so much fun,”
Thanks for posting this. I got some good laughs from it. I love the palm pilot reference:
Lmao. There are times that I wish computers and cell phones were not around.
Computers will simplify our life so much we will have an overabundance of free time
Yep, that happened. Totally killed the need for brink and mortar shops plus the need to go out the door for anything more than coffee… oh wait that can be delivered now. Thanks doordash.
Point being, at the high level we have so much free time we don’t know what to do with ourselves.
- Computers will do away with the need for paper.
Yeah did that too, since when was the last time anyone ever picked up a paper book or news print and really bothered with it? Sure it didn’t kill the idea of it but the bookstore is going the way of well blockbuster.
- We will never need more than 640K of memory
yeah… and?
I only read paper books, I’m only 35 but I hate reading on a kindle or anything like that. Nothing beats reading a physical book IMO.
