So I am trying to build a 4’x4’ table for a hobby CNC router and I came across Torsion Boxes. I see quite a few videos of people building the torsion box sections out of ripped MDF but I was wondering if I could use some 1x4 or 1x3 I have laying around to accomplish the same thing.
I was thinking of jointing one of side of each board, planing the other, and then cutting it to size to create the torsion box.
Any suggestions or opinions? OR Should I just bite the bullet and use the MDF?
Use whatever you want for the ribs. FYI, most hollow core doors are actually torsion boxes and some of the low end ones have cardboard ribs. Key thing is consistent height of the ribs and a surface sheet on both top & bottom. For best results over time use something like plywood ribs to resist expansion with seasonal humidity swings.
