Can somebody recommend good / easy / fast options to finish 3D printed ABS,
with a finish that is
- durable
- scratch resistant
- finger oil and smudge resistant
- low odor
I tried Rustoleum Truck Bed Coating,
which is great, except it smells too much for use e.g. on a night-stand at home…
@Hardsuit has done some beautiful work making ABS shine with an exceptionally awesome finish! Perhaps he has some suggestions?
You could try old-fashioned plasti-dip - the kind you actually dip your stuff into. It dries into a tough, thick, rubberized coating, typically used on tool handles. It comes in a few colors - you may have better luck ordering online it if you want something other than black or red.
ABS is very similar to the plastic used in plastic scale models, so any of the “hobby shop” paints intended for plastic scale models would work as well.
If you don’t mind waiting forever for it to dry there’s a plastic primer from Rustoleum that works great. If I recall correctly it takes 4 days to dry. From there you can use pretty much whatever paint you want and it’ll adhere strongly.
It is a little pricy, but SmoothOn makes an epoxy product specifically for finishing off 3D printed parts, smoothing the surface in the process.
I believe it fits all your requested criteria, and while it comes clear, it can be colored using metallic pigments, tints, and colors.
1 oz will cover 100 sq inches.
It comes in a 6oz and 24oz kit: the latter is much more cost effective on Amazon:
