As a 3D modeling/printing novice, the following two-part article gives an excellent analytical and intuitive intro to simple design elements that can yield a much more robust design.

There was an interesting link in the above article pointing out the benefits of resin casting for making some small parts where 3D printing is either inferior or impractical, or where ABS/PLA isn’t strong enough.
