Project Recruiting Night

I’m new so maybe this or something like this happens…

I am guessing that with all of the new members (like me) that there are a LOT of members who are not participating on any DMS projects. Many of these probably want to participate, but they don’t know who needs help and how to get involved.

Why not have one night a month be a project recruiting night where any DMS member who has a new or existing project can pitch their project. I am imagining that each project in need would have a poster with at least the name of their project and a list of skills needed. Project representatives could setup around the space and members looking for a new challenge could wander the space talking to project reps. Similar to a job fair, but for projects.

To make it really easy, we could have laminated “Team Members Wanted” posters (at least 11x17) with fields for: Project Name, Committee, Needed Skills. Then project teams could just use dry erase markers to fill it in for project recruiting night.

That’s an interesting idea, though I’m of the impression that most people at DMS are lone tinkerers and inventors.

I gotta tell you about the soup idea. It’s mini crowd sourcing.

Could probably couple it with one of the Open House events. They can tour the space then have the project thing start around 7:30 or so.

Soup, you say?

Sounds like a good idea, maybe the monthly member meetings could be changed to provide that purpose. Would you be interested in scheduling and leading the project recruiting night?

Yes, but not all the time.

Here is the idea visualized nicely and narrated poorly. Found out about it via a teacher workshop - always felt the idea was fantastic. I’m all about junk like this.

We did this in San Diego we called it the P4. Same concept as the soup grant, but pizza.

  1. PIZZA
  2. PITCH
  3. PICK
  4. PAY

So, how should this work here? Should it be like a faire where projects just put up displays and people wander around to view all the projects or should it be more of a presentation style in the lecture hall? How can projects raise money? (direct donations or would it have to go to DMS and then be applied to a committee fund to support the project with hardware/supplies?)

Thats a great idea! Please go through with this.

No need to make it to complicated or poster boards or anything formal.

When we did P4 once a month it was napkin style ideas shared over a pizza or two with people willing to help, chip in five bucks or give there 2 cents.

I can set it up, post it where it needs to be posted, so people can get the idea and we can wing it from there. I have some stuff to pitch and I’m always a sucker for pizza.
