Project Fi in DFW

Has anyone used Project Fi?

  • If so, have you used it with an iPhone?

  • And furthermore, have you used it in rural areas?

I have it. It works pretty well in rural areas, except for the occasional dropped call when it switches between T-Mo and Spring (but the call would’ve dropped if you only had a single carrier, anyways).

I have a Nexus 6P. I wouldn’t recommend using it in an iPhone, since that effectively keeps you on T-Mobile.

It doesn’t work with the iPhone.

Received my SIM card. Without first activating it in a preferred device, it successfully connected my iPhone 5S to the Project Fi towers and got data service. When placing phone calls, it told me my device was restricted.

Per my research online, I’ll need to activate it on a preferred device before I can make phone calls with it.

It’s unfortunate. Being “restricted” is a system setting. The phone will likely work if I can get the account activated.

From what I’ve read even after you activate the service the iPhone will use only one network (T-Mobile) and won’t hop around to the best available because the phone simply doesn’t have the software and logic to do it. This is a feature of the software on the phone and it has to be specially added by the developers. Fi doesn’t have its own towers or network. It uses T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular.

When will Project Fi support other smartphones?

Pixel, the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6 are the first smartphones that support Project Fi’s network of networks. We currently only support these devices.
