Programming classes or lack thereof

I feel I don’t see many programming related classes offered at DMS. I’ve toyed with the idea of teaching something since I do web dev professionally, but I wasn’t sure if the classes maybe haven’t done well or we just don’t have people willing to teach them. I’m interested to see if there’s anything other DMS members are hoping for.

We have a newly formed SDC (Software Development Committee).

To clarify… I am only a member of the group but we all try to contribute. We welcome your input and contributions. We have several programming classes coming soon…

Please watch the calendar for the SDC meetings and the Ruby on Rails class series. (although that class series may already be full as I believe it was limited to 100 students.)

What classes would you like to teach?

Awesome, I wasn’t aware of the new committee.

As for classes, well like I said I do web dev so HTML, CSS, and JS are my forte. I use typescript at work and I’m fairly excited about web components at the moment. I also really enjoyed data structures in school which is something I don’t think you see outside of academia really. It’s been a while, but I wouldn’t mind brushing up on that knowledge and teaching a little big O notation.

We would love to have you join SDC and teach classes… that is what we are all about… teaching, learning and sharing the wealth we get from it all…

In the last month we have some recurring classes that cover Python, Wordpress, and Raspberry pi classes which has some entry level scripting.

We are extraordinarily proud that last week two of our own awesome programmers won a hackathon… by unanimous vote of the judges!!!

I need to request @Coul our awesome audio video and PR guy… post a video demo here for us to show off the amazing project they did.

@NickWebb and I teach a series of Arduino classes for the Electronics committee. The newest is Arduino Programming 101.and is open to those with no electronics or programming experience. Its not the kind of class you are referencing but I thought I would get a bit of attention for new classes we will be listing in a few days!

Thank you, much appreciated.

I am also willing to teach a programming class - or other classes at DMS. The biggest hindrance for me is curriculum, slides, etc. If I had something as a starting point that I could tailor, that would be great.

Does anyone know of any resources for class materials? Obviously, there are videos. But, I am looking for something more like Powerpoint slides.

Calling @Team_Education

Here’s a ppt framework @Raymond created.
https://dallasmakerspace.org/wiki/File:DMS_Vector_Template_-_Red.zip
I’m not sure if that’s what you’re looking for, but it is a starting point on a class presentation…

@jast - Yes, that is 50% of what I am looking for. The other 50% is a starting set of slides for a topic that I can play around with and modify to fit my teaching style.

Yes, “lazy” is a good term. But, the idea is that getting started is 90% of the battle because brain freeze can set in quickly.

I can do Python, Raspberry Pi, networking, and pretty much any other programming or electronic type of class on an introductory to intermediate level. I can also do business/finance/entrepreneur types of classes.

Thanks for linking!

James, the template deck is based on what we use at work with a large number of presenters (field engineers and business unit folks) who are to put their knowledge into 45 to 90 minute sessions to share with other field sales engineers and partner engineers. It’s laid out so that someone who has never built a slide deck for presenting can build an effective deck and organize their thoughts in a way to help better get their information across.

If you need help with laying out your knowledge into that framework, just ping me.

Raymond

Doubt there’s a lack thereof. I know @thespacemaker hosts a tone of classes and so does several members of @Team_VCC on their own.

Linking to class subjects we do have:

https://localhost.mlh.io/

https://dallasmakerspace.org/wiki/Category:Computer_Committee#Classes

Online hosted classes

Class turn out and interest tends to be sporadic among the space thus we have moved our classes to self paced and with lesson material being online. So feel free to login with your DMS credentials and have fun.

Things like the Comptia, AWS, and Network+ Certification Prep are on hold until the expansion so we can bring in the lab equipment full time instead needing to rely on the generosity of the instructor for providing their own lab equipment.

DevOps and Docker classes are available on demand Calendly - Dwight Spencer and we just had a blockchain class hosted by @Corbimos

In general as Committee Chair I’ll leave it to the committee to come up with classes and projects. But If one is wanting to teach a class then feel free to PM me and I’ll be able to get them the class materials and any thing else they need for the class.

I’ve taught three classes before, 2 on R, and one on some software. It just seems an issue to get everyone on the same page in terms of setup with right editor, library, pace, etc. Also feels way more uncomfortable than teaching something in creative arts just because I don’t know all the ins and out of why something is the way it is in a language. Am contemplating teaching a class on Matlab using the free open source clone of it, Octave. Or otherwise something again in R or maybe Basic just to see if anyone shows up. First have to improve on teaching methods and materials to be intro friendly.

Also a class in SQL is something I’d definitely show my face in.

Most of the classes are prepared by individual instructors. Different people have different styles of teaching. Some flip through an extensive slide deck and summarize each one. Others use no slides at all or only have them as supplemental material.

It’s not a write-up, but the video link contained within the post covers the topic pretty well… Programming classes or lack thereof - #6 by Coul
