I signed up for the Pottery class this evening but after reading the description I feel that maybe it’s not for newbies?

Take the class! She, @dryad2b goes over a lot of things to get you started, and will go over cleaning up the area.
And short fingernails, which I really don’t want to think about the reason for that disclaimer if it’s got anything to do with having less fingernails than when you started.

Go for it Crystal! This is one of the things you signed up for … drag your husband or have him drive you here so he can see the things we talked about.
Take advantage of as many classes as you can - if for nothing else to learn that you really don’t like or need it. People are often surprised at what new interests they find.

Beth is a good teacher, let her know if you are totally new to clay. If you are new to working with clay.
just play and learn about the material some. Dont expect to throw a pot today Just have fun
Longish finger nails make beautiful randomly placed #!*@/$%&# crescent shaped marks in the thrown wet clay AND they are a PITA to remove.
A friend told me this…lol.

Years ago I was riding the bus and the lady sitting across from me seemed to have some sort
of long bean like pods in her hand, I kep trying to figure them out, there was traces of red on parts of them
When she stood up to get off , I realized that what I was seeing a long curling fingernail at least a foot long!
I had to wonder how long it took her to grow that nail
