Quick Fired Arts Report:

We had a very successful western and obvara Raku Workshop offsite last month at a local potter’s home and will be heading back once it cools down a bit for a second round focusing on terra sigilatta and horsehair raku. We will also be having a Slipcasting Mold Workday on Saturday, July 21st from 2pm — 4pm for anyone interested in helping decide which molds will become part of the committee’s library.

Perhaps most exciting was a very successful Train the Trainers session which was well attended. Our get together was less about the specifics of any one tool and more about what the committee could do to help new and first time instructors. We covered supply purchasing, the calendar interface and answered a lot questions about how teaching at DMS works. A lot of ceramics classes are best taught as multiple sessions and so we also discussed options for co-teaching and finding helper buddies. All in all, a great evening and I hope to see everyone back with some new and exciting ceramics classes in the next few months.

Digital Media Report:

  • New Equipment!: replaced stolenrecorder with a new Tascam recorder, bought LED lights with stands and barn doors, bought camera flash and remote, bought sand bags and clamps bc we didn’t have any.
  • We have refined the rules around reserving the Digital Media room. (shortening maximum session limits, asking members to note how long they will tie up the room)
  • There has been discussion about buying a new camera, but I’m not convinced it is needed at the moment, one reason for that is…
  • We still don’t have a solution to account for equipment. I’m thinking about offering a bounty for anyone who can create a RFID badge system comparable to the one in 3D fab.
