Do we have a small injection molding machine around DMS anywhere to make small plastic parts?
No we do not
There’s been some talk about a project in plastics to build one…
I would be happy to assist with that. Is there a SIG for injection molding or can you point me to the source the other interested parties?
Does plastics have its own meetings? I haven’t noticed any “Plastics” Committee Meetings posted.
No, it is still under Machine Shop and so we cover the plastics/composites in the Machine Shop meetings.
This is a very small injection molding machine I worked on just about 7.5 years ago. It was made in the 50’s, the guy had the patent on the wall for it. It did not have a wiring diagram so I had to create one.
I’ve seen a variety of ‘prototype’ machines. The medical engineering/design companies I’ve worked with have gotten rid of them due to space/maintenance needs vs. utility. Used commercial, perhaps of slightly more recent version than Tim’s task, may still be a better choice than a build-ones-own. For DMS, limiting to low pressure processes may also make sense. My colleagues are currently making a parts with a low viscosity (hand injection) silicone, curing in a heated press.
I had a job in high school running industrial versions.
Very cool!
