I’ve completed the course on the use of the CNC Plasma Cutter. I think I’m ready to try my new skills but would prefer to have an experienced user watch over my 1st use of the machine.
I’d like to try Thursday 3/27 in the morning sometime. Is anyone available to assist?
AFAIK, although the training slides are available online, reviewing those will not grant you certification to use the machine. First you need to take the Hot Process Safety Course online at learn.dallasmakerspace.org and then you need in-person training for the Dynatorch.
@Mrholthaus - is this still the process or have things changed?
Best bet is to state your interest in a class (on Talk) and see if you get any volunteers to teach. That’s a pretty popular machine and others are likely to chime in and ask to participate.
But IMO you deserve extra credit for actually reading the training material in advance!
Sorry, maybe I wasn’t clear. I have passed the Hot Process safety course and have taken the CNC Plasma Cutting Machine Course. I AM certified for the machine. I’d just like for someone to watch and ensure I’m doing everything right on my first usage.
Oh I’m sorry. I thought you meant you had taken some online training. Mea culpa. You’re proceeding exactly along the correct path.
I probably won’t get in tomorrow until after 1 PM.
I think I could be there around 2P. It would be great if you could watch over me.
I’ll help but understand that I’ll be splitting my attention between you and another.
That’s great. I appreciate it. I just want someone there when I finally hit the go button to make sure all seems OK.
I should be good signing on, loading my sheetcam file, processing it and loading my material.
BTW, if your email me your phone #, I could text you when I’m ready for you to pop in on me.

I tried to get back and see the result, but you’d already gone. How did it come out? Need pictures!
Rich,
I sent photos separately. THANK YOU so much. Great help. I’m sure I can do it on my own now.
I think the instructor for future classes needs to actually produce a quick drawing on QCAD (including layers), create a tool process using SheetCam (with interior cutouts and an outer profile and process it, then load it into ??? (Can’t remember the name of dynastic software) and run the job. We missed ALL that in our class.
Anyway, I’d have gone home very disappointed without your help today.
Let me know if there is any way I can help you out in the future.
Bill
Keep in mind the more you use it, the better you become. There are so many features in the software. Take for instance Plasma Mate(inside of the dynatorch program). It is a canned list of various components. Including brackets, flanges and etc. these canned list of items you can adjust the measurements to make work for your specific needs.
For instance I cranked these out yesterday using Plasma Mate.
I meant to ask. What font did you use?
I just used Arial Black, but I had to explode each letter and modify each to bridge the internal areas that I didn’t want to fall out.
I’ve sanded each now. I’ll send another set of photos once I get some paint on them. Might be a few days.
I was in class with you that evening, and was able to produce this that same night. Definitely far from a refined product, but I think it came out pretty decently.
Definitely a ton more to learn than can be covered In a single class, but I feel it was plenty to give us a good jumping-off point.
My main problem was that the generator needed to be turned on BEFORE performing a trial run. Without the generator, the program locked up. Then when I installed my consumables, the generator fault light came on. Turns out Welder Supply does NOT know exactly what equipment DMS has and I was provided the wrong nozzle. Other than those 2 issues, I was able to do everything I wanted. I just need to think up a new project, get some steel and get working on it. BTW, I’ve now sanded and painted mine, turned out EXCELLENT.
Here is my finished No Trespassing sign. I promised I would post, so here it is. I used double sided tape to attach a white Acrylic background to highlight the lettering.
e lettering.
I liked how my No Trespassing sign turned out so well that I went back today (4/1/2025) and created more stuff. The long thin sign with dots and measures is a snow depth gage. I’ll mount it at ground level in view of my camera so I can tell how deep the snow is. I also created an address sign with a Spanish Peaks profile on top. I also used the laser to cut out a sheet of acrylic that just matches the profile and I can tape in place. It was clear but the photo shows after I’ve painted one side white. I also made a few miscellaneous brackets as it easily fit within my material. The steel is all .144" thick.
