Pick when to have the class on ROM Hacking an arcade game

Some of you might know that last month I hacked Bally Midway’s “Tapper” game to show Community logos rather than Budweiser for an event at Community Beer. Now, I want to share my learnings with you.

This will be a discussion of how to use MAME to examine the ROMs (tile viewer and debugger), the way in which the Tapper graphics are encoded, editing the ROMs without getting ROM errors because of bad checksums, making scaled pixel art well, and the custom Python program I wrote to put the graphics in the desired spot. Most of this would probably be applicable to other games of a similar vintage, and somewhat to console games too (but less so with newer consoles).

When, you might ask, is this transpiring? Well, you get to decide! Vote on your desired time at http://www.needtomeet.com/meeting?id=zp5ar8tiV . I will take these into consideration and set the class time as early as tomorrow afternoon.
