Parachute Material

While I see a few categories this could possibly fit, I’m going to start by placing it here.

Giving away-

Going through some of my old stuff, I came across an older main canopy. I can open the deployment bag to get the details, but here is what I remember. It is roughly a 250 square foot, 7 cell (rectangle / ram air) neon colored parachute. So, what does that mean for those that do not plan to throw themselves out of planes? It means that you can have a lot of neon colored fabric (f-111 nylon with zero p top skin) and suspension lines to use for other projects. (CA, sewing…?..)

Just let me know if you are interested and I will bring it to space tomorrow, when I’m there for the vinyl cutting class.

I am interested in using this for a pop out canopy for my jeep

Will you be around there tomorrow?

Would this be good for making kites?

Most likely yes but if not you can just leave it by the v8 engine stored in project storage

I know that the top skin of the chute would be, for sure, but I would be willing to bet that you could use the rest of the material too, depending on the type of kite you are making. I believe that I have the reserve that was in the same container, as well. Since, @snaps claimed the main, I could bring the reserve and let you try to make something. It’s not as large and it’s only white (if I remember correctly), but you are welcome to it. If it doesn’t work for your needs, no loss other than time.

The more I think about it, I know you can make it work. This same fabric, caught a gust of wind while I was on the ground (and before I collected the canopy), and it inflated and jerked me off of my feet. This is also a good reason to close the nose of the chute, if you are looking to make a shade out of it, so that it doesn’t inflate and damage anything that it is tied to.

The support structure will be plenty sturdy to keep it from flying away but I was just needing an ultra light weight relatively strong material and a parachute is nearly the perfect source

Now wouldn t a kite making class be fun?

So, I was incorrect. I saw the neon green in the bag and assumed it was the main. Upon further inspection, it was the reserve in a green deployment bag. I am about to leave it next to the engine. I left the spring loaded pilot chute attached. (Not compressed) When I find the main, I will bring it, if you are still interested.

Parachutes are the new hot thing in party decor. Hung like a canopy with killer lighting. They are lucious looking. Google it.

I’m thinking of making a few kites. Is the parachute fabric gone? It would make great kite making material.

That particular one is gone. I’m not sure if @snaps has used the one I gave him yet. I still have a brightly colored main canopy and a larger pilot cute, somewhere at the house. It’s made of two different types of material and should be awesome for making kites. I will update this thread, when I find them.
