Paper tape storage and conversion

Found a few hits for punched paper tapes on ebay preloaded with some sort of data:

I’m wondering if we got a few of these how would we go able digitizing it and being able to read/use the data or programs stored there?

I’ve used paper tape in days gone by and I doubt that you would find much useful information of them. Most contained Machine code (Assembly Language most often) programing. One of the first PC’s I had access to was a Commodore PET and we used paper Tape to store the code we wrote, most of it diagnostic code to test other computers. They were also used on Military weapon control systems, mainly to backup programing information that was entered via toggle switches

cool. so basically once we translate it to some binary code a little digital forensics to figure out what’s in the data would be needed.

Obviously there was some sort of standard so would there be a way to tell the details like platform, bit order/encoding, and the like?
