Operations Rules - Confusion/Issues?

Continuing the discussion from Ops Committee Meeting - April 2nd.

I’ve been told there are issues or confusion with “operations rules”, I’d like to help make sure everyone is on the same page. There are no “operations rules”, other than the posted Project Storage Rules.

The feedback I’ve received so far on the project storage rules has all been positive. We have over 700 members now, so it can be difficult making sure everyone has space for their projects. Feedback is always welcome, both positive and negative, without it we have no way to determine if something needs to be changed. I’ve created this thread so that if there are issues that need to be addressed with the storage rules, we can address them.

If you wish to respond in private, feel free to PM me.

I would suggest when tossing things left past expiration, you take pictures and disassemble them with a sledge hammer, then post those pics on forum as a threat of what will happen if you ignore the storage rules.

Storage rules are good, but tossing stuff out a day after or because of a
clerical error seems a bit harsch (by clerical error I mean something
didn’t get filled out properly and baam it’s in the trash the next day) I
suggest, as I have before that there should be cooling off period and a
noticed posted online. The reason is, because if I only show up once a
week and if I miss a date only to come back a week later to find my stuff
missing (trashed). I do know Texas does have laws regarding Lost & Found
and abandoned stuff and maybe something that should be looked into.

@mlass, I believe you are thinking of the old storage rules. The sign-in sheet simply has you fill in a start and end date. The maximum time allowed for storage (without shooting an email to ops requesting an extension) is 30 days. We only toss stuff that’s been on the shelves for more than 30 days.

Here are the current rules:

These shelves are set aside to provide temporary storage to members who are actively working on a project. We are not a storage facility.

  1. Find an open section with a section identifier (e.g A-10).
  2. Completely fill out the sign-in sheet.
  3. Use of the storage shelves is limited to 30 days maximum.
  4. Items stored on the floor must be authorized by Operations.

My understanding was after 30 days you would sign up for another 30 days,
is that still valid or do people have to remove stuff after 30 days. Also,
if you didn’t fill out the form and used a space what happens then? Do you
30 days before item is removed or how does ops handle that? If 30 days is
not the maximum, is there a limit on extension requested?

You have to remove stuff after 30 days, storage is for temporary use only.

Your stuff would likely be thrown out at the next cleaning (normally on Thursday).

30 days is the maximum, you can e-mail [email protected] to request an extension. You can also e-mail ops to get approval for longer term storage ahead of time. Of note, every request submitted to ops so far has been approved.

If there isn’t already, having a notification system and ultimatum before stuff gets thrown out, like an email or phone on the chart might help.

There was a group working on something like that. I think the project stalled though.

If anyone wants to make a webapp I can provide hosting and a tablet (for local interface).
