Nuclear Science Week 2016, 17-21 October

I have submitted calendar requests for a Nuclear Science Day event on Saturday the 22nd, from noon to 8 PM, and for Introduction to Atomic Energy class dates on Monday the 17th, Tuesday the 18th, Thursday the 20th, & Friday the 21st at 8.30 PM. There is an outside chance (ie, I’m hoping but not holding my breath) that I’ll be out of town part of that week, in which case I’ll need to reschedule the classes.

Among the things I hope to have finished by that time is a setup for “fingerprinting” radioactive materials — I have the multichannel analyzer, so now I need the scintillation-counter part of the apparatus, with its high-voltage supply.

As usual, exhibits for Nuclear Science Day are invited. Hopefully this year I can not only remember the dry ice for the cloud chamber, but actually get it to work. Finicky things, they are.

I hope you don’t have to go out of town during the week of October 17th! I’m looking forward to attending your classes!

OK, looks like I need to reschedule the classes to Thursday the 20th, Friday the 21st, Monday the 23d, & Tuesday the 24th. Nuclear Science Day will remain Saturday. the 22d. @AlexRhodes, how do I do that? I tried “Edit Event” on the Calendar page, but it just threw some kind of error message.

@william_petefish, I need to have a look at that scintillator you’ve mentioned, if I’m going to find a way to join it up with the multichannel analyzer.

You will need to cancel the event(s). This will notify anyone who is signed up that the class is cancelled. You can then reschedule them as needed. If there are any costs associated with your class the attendees will be refunded. We do not allow the moving around of classes because this is not fair to the people that signed up. It creates headaches when people show up only to find out the class is the next day or next week. From what I can tell only one person signed up so I would suggest contacting them to let them know that after they receive the cancellation email that you will have new dates posted.

Setting aside your moral disapproval for a moment, how would I do that? Certainly “Edit Event” isn’t the way, since clicking that link gets me a page full of error messages, headed by “Cannot call “converttoformat” it does not belong to any attached behavior.
BadMethodCallException”

And, while I would agree that rescheduling classes with a short date would be a problem, it only makes sense to allow rescheduling with some lead time, say two or three weeks. If you already have a system for e-mailing notification of cancelled classes, it shouldn’t be too much trouble to have it do the same for rescheduled ones.

Can you still access the cancelled event? FWIW, if so, the people that signed up their email address may still be there, you could notify them that way. Not automatic but it gives you at least one possible way.

Im suuuuper happpy your teaching again!!

I just like saying noo cyoo lure.

I have cancelled your event. Please put in your class with the new dates.

It looks like they have been resubmitted - ar some are in the queue for review

OK, classes are available for signing up again. (Apparently the calendar system doesn’t send approval notices. Bah.)

@jkraemer, I hope you will sign up for the revised dates, & I apologize for the inconvenience.
@Ebony_Jackson, I’m happy to do it! I’ve made up a poster which will need to be printed on the large-format — can that be done as a Science committee thing, without costing me money?

Oooof course!! Hit me up with the pics and how many and I’ll get you set up.

Now, to let everybody know : even if you’ve sat through my “Introduction to Atomic Energy” presentations before, I am making some modifications & additions to the material. Expect some of these to show up in the slide set on the Wiki between now & then.

Just as a reminder :
Introduction to Atomic Energy classes begin tonight.
Nuclear Science Day is Saturday.

If you have radiation-detecting instruments, radioactive items, or the like, do bring them!
