**(3) Hello. I just joined DMS. I enjoyed a tour and orientation on Saturday, Nov 25. I am interested in using the blacksmithing and welding tools and spaces. I believe I need to attend a class or orientation before doing that, and I do not see anything on the calendar. Thank you for your help. Virginia

PLEASE REMEMBER DALLAS MAKERSPACE IS AN ALL VOLUNTARY RUN COMMUNITY.
Our volunteers will handle the reported issues as quickly as possible; however, there is no guaranteed time frame for resolution - due to the voluntary nature of how things work around here.

Please consider volunteering to help maintain some of our resources to help keep things running as smooth as possible here! Thank you!

:bulb: If you are reporting or resolving an equipment issue, please also update the tool status board appropriately.

:warning: NOTE: This category is NOT for discussion threads. Any “discussion” will be split out by one of the TALK Moderators to create a separate “discussion thread”.

Good morning, I’d suggest coming to the metal shop committee meeting this weekend. You dont need in metal shop training for all of the equipment. Only for the welding & CNC plasma. They both have the requirement of the Hot Process

Great - thank you!

Take the Hot process class on learn.dallasmakerspace.org

Check the calendar frequently for classes, we don’t have a waiting list system. If you see a class but its full come anyway, if someone else cancels you can take their spot.
If you already have welding experience we can check you off at the metalshop meeting.
I have sort of office hours monday nights to help people or teach a class. I’m working on rebuilding a belt grinder and woodshop drill press so dont have time for adhoc classes till after the first of the year, If you can paint come tonight or next week.
Thanks
Randy

Thank you Randy!

Most of the time I will teach classes on Saturday and Sunday. For the month of December I will make some more and the basic class with cover safety and go over what you need to know to use the tools.

OK, great! I assume that you will add these to the calendar? I will keep an eye there. Thank you!

Virginia

Yes I will for sure the 10th there will be an open forge the other dates I haven’t come up with fully. Yes keep an eye out. If not I can come up to Makerspace weekday evening time to help with anything simple like teaching. I work close by and get off around 5:30-7:30 depending on the day.

Great, I am sure that one of the times you set will work for me, thanks, I look forward to meeting you.

Virginia

Hello Nicholas,

I am also interested in a blacksmithing basics class.

Do you have any upcoming classes?

Hi Nicholas. Are you planning an open forge for Saturday? If so, what time would you be there?

Thank you!

Virginia

I have a meeting Saturday with the north Texas blacksmith association after the meeting I might be able to come to the space not sure times though. Should be able to make it there Sunday without an issue.

Sunday works for me, any time. Thank you!

Hey Nicholas. Just to clarify, I do not need a blacksmithing class. I just need to get oriented to the space and know how things work there, and get a green light for using it. I don’t see any propane tanks, only unattached regulators. Do you use the propane forges? Or only induction? I have used propane (and coal) but I have never used induction before. Is there is someone else who might be able to show me the ropes of the shop if you do not have time? Thank you. Virginia

I am planning to head that way in the next minutes. If you want a run down of the induction forge the red tool box has a blue folder that goes over basic uses for the induction forge and kmg 2x72

Great, I’m out and about so I will head in. Thank you.

Hey Nicholas. I will need to leave soon. I read through the book you referenced and watched a member doing some forging with the induction. Would it be ok if I move forward on my own with some simple work this week?

Around the corner.

Of course I trust you are capable. There is definitely some safety to keep in mind but as far as basic use that folder will cover the machine in great detail. If you have questions about anything I will help you as best as I can.

Thank you! I will go by the book and also watch some YouTube ahead of time.
