New to us Belt Grinder in Metal shop

I saw this Burr King 2.5x60 belt grinder on an auction site, placed a low bid, and accidentally won it. Looks like it was hardly used. It is being rewired for 208-230, has a built in dust collector. It will be on indefinite loan to the Metal shop. We already had a power drop waiting for it.

Please don’t abuse it. When using any belt or bench grinder use light pressure and ALWAYS keep the part moving across the face of the belt or wheel. Someone recently destroyed our huge sanding disk and a scotchbrite belt by pressing too hard and not moving the part so it cut a groove in the abrasive.

Since the belts are super easy to change out on the Burr King vs our other horizontal belt grinder and glue on disk sander we are going to try providing a course belt, if the belts get damaged before they are worn out we’ll need to go to “Bring your own belt”

Someone needs to make a sign with this instruction (and similar ones about sleeves, rings, jewelry getting caught; etc.) and tape/glue it to the front of the machine – under the top “Burr King” sign. I volunteer . . .

. . . anyone else to do it.

Only problem with that is most people do not read signs.

We need signs with lasers that sock it to the offenders. Or sharks. With lasers.

All jokes aside this is a great acquisition. Thank you for loaning it.

@rlisbona Kick azz acquisition and awesome of your indefinite loan.

@TBJK we should make a sign that teaches people to read signs

People who do not read signs usually get laughed out of court. So it’s still worth having. It can make the difference between victory and an expensive settlement.

It wouldn’t need to be elaborate. Blue tape and a marker would do the job …

There’s not much risk to the operator. It’s just tedious doing the repairs.

I talked to Burr King and they said don’t mix steel and aluminum due to fire hazard. So we should include that in the sign in case someone reads it.

Aluminium and steel dust sounds like a recipe for some thermite, it could be a fun surprise.

It could be fun to make

We should have a maker event to do that… and to do it safely.

And we assume everyone knows when / how to use a class D fire extinguisher. :grimacing:

It’s not too bad, you can put it in a flower put and suspend the pot over a bucket of sand. Light it with a strip of magnesium, run away, and watch molten iron drip down into the sand.
