I’ve seen a few self proclaimed new people say they attended or will attend “new member orientation” and seem to be referencing tour night. Can anyone point out where they may be getting the idea that it’s an orientation?
We should probably change any wording leading to that thought, maybe its one of the ways a tour guide is speaking or something.
Possibly @Kriskat30 's actual orientation class? (Not that I ever in a million years think that Kris would give bad info on purpose ) she’s done like 3 now, I think
So…
If [SWIM?] wanted to assist in getting the existing Orientation Moodleised, would that be of interest to anyone? (I think this would be an AWESOME use of Moodle, and very advantageous to new members to be able to access it any time, anywhere)
IF @Kriskat30 is interested in allowing that.
If [SWIM?] can access the Moodle to play around work with that (what is required to have “contributor?” access to the Moodle?)
I have made you a course creator. You can create a course but it wont be published till a manager approves it. You also can only work on your own courses. You can not modify other peoples classes but you can always modify your own.
Let me know if I need to create Categories.
If anyone else wants to create a course please PM or email me and I can do so.
FWIW, I just signed up a few weeks ago. On the wiki home page, under the “How to Join” section in the top right, I had noted "3. Attend a Thursday meeting to go through the new member process and get your key." I would probably have described/thought of this as “orientation”, even though it was not explicitly called that. I then looked for an event on the calendar that seemed to coincide with this, registering for the Monthly Meeting by mistake.
Are you talking about the DMS website/Join where it says, “Attend a weekly Thursday tour night to go through the new member process described in the welcome e-mail to get your key.” (bullet 3)
I couldn’t find it in the wiki, so if you can remember where you saw it, that would help.
FWIW, as a clarification, the wiki is technically separate from the website. The wiki is intended as an internally-facing source of member knowledge and the website is an externally-facing source of community knowledge. Yep - I know - it’s confusing and probably not explained anyplace.
Yes, that’s it. Had actually signed up as a ember before ever visting the space or attending an event, then was retroactively looking for info on what to do next.
I have long felt that some kind of a new member
orientation would do wonders to help folks get
encouraged to become more active in the space.
Some sort of an orientation for each dept every
few months would be wonderful. This is being
done in Jewelry/small metal, It is not a how to
class, It goes over the various pieces of equipment
we have and which ones need some training on,
It allows folks to see hat is available.
It would allow those not familiar with what a HAAS
is used for or what the various types of welding
we have can do,
One of our goals is EDUCATION and we are not
doing a very good job of doing that for our members
I would LOVE to know what all the machines in the
tool shop do, When I took the woodshop basics, I
learned about the joiner and planner, I had a bit of an
idea from watching wood working show on TV. But
no one explained the router and what it can do to us,
Right now, if you know you want to use a certain tool
then you can learn to use it, but if you DON T know if
you might want to one it remains just an object,
Now not member will want to learn about every area.
I have an idea that most of the guys will have little
interest in learning about our fiber tools, Jeanne
regularly will have an open fiber night where she
will explain what we have to folks,
