New: "Glaze Hospital" Bin

The glaze volunteers are working hard to maintain the glazes in inventory, but we need your help!

There’s a grey plastic bin on the counter by the payment kiosk for glazes that need help. The paper sign on the bin (that someone keeps taking off?) is temporary, I’m working on making a better one.

Put the glaze in the bin if it’s:

  • got less than the amount you’d need for a small mug in the bottle
  • watered down
  • dried out or un-brushable
  • contaminated (has another glaze, debris, or objects in it)
  • it has other problems

Please add a note on a piece of masking tape so we know what to fix (if it isn’t obvious).

How we maintain our glaze inventory:

  • Your glaze payment in the kiosk is tied to the glazes we purchase, and others we’re considering adding to the shelf. These donations help us adjust our glaze budget.
  • The more people who remember to pay for their use of the glazes, the more we can keep on hand. There’s signs above the glaze shelves with suggested donation amounts.
  • We often have backups of popular glazes, and can restock as soon as we see them in the bin (if the glaze issue can’t be repaired).
  • We only purchase glazes within a glaze budget once a month, so it may take a while to replace a glaze if we don’t have a backup on hand.

Things to know about glazes

  • Not all glazes are made with the same consistency. Some are more liquid (Spectrum’s Running Hot Chowder is made watery) and others are made chunky (Amaco’s Oatmeal). It’s hard to know if you don’t have a lot of experience. We’re here to help.
  • There’s a ratio of “water to gum solution” that we need to maintain so the glazes actually stick to your pieces and don’t flake off when they dry. Let us handle the glaze adjustments.
  • Watered-down glazes don’t enough reactive ingredients in “3 coats” to create the right effect, and turn this result

into this blobby mess:

We have a new, more-recognizable bin! We’re getting the vinyl labels cut but in the mean time it has a white cross on a red bin
