Nesting software?

Wondering if there is some part nesting software on the laser computers or on the JUMP server?

I am guessing you are talking about software to automate making nesting boxes. If not, please ignore what follows.

There is a Tabbed Box plugin for Inkscape that I’ve used to make nesting boxes, but it only makes one box at a time, so one has to make the adjustments for each level manually. I modded the plugin to include a checkbox for open-topped boxes (top edge is smooth rather than tabbed, 5 sides instead of 6).

The two files you’ll need are in my Members Folder: M:\Mike Churchill\Box Cutting Plugin for InkScape 092. The 092 version is modded by me to support the Inkscape changes from 091 to 092 since the plugin was not updated.

These need to be copied to your C:\Program Files\Inkscape\share\extensions folder.

There is a third file in this folder: this spreadsheet will help compute the values to enter into the tabbed box plugin for each box. You’ll need to know:

  • the innermost box’s desired outside dimensions
  • the thickness of the material (note that 1/4" plywood is typically 0,2" - use a caliper to check)
  • the “easing” - how much slop in the spacing - too small and you’ll not be able to easily slip the boxes in and out
  • padding - I was making dice boxes for board games, and allowed for felt in the bottom of each box - set to zero if not using.

I hope this helps.

Note that this (extermely useful) plugin is not consistently installed on the DMS machines - was in the past, but repeated “upgrades” wiped it out. You may have to install it on your OWN machine instead.

Awesome share on nesting boxes!
I think OP means this kind of nesting.

I have no recommendations.

I vaguely recall that VCarve does nesting. Getting output may be difficult. It does have an Export.

I also recall someone mentioned an open source tool that does nesting.

Huh. I wonder…

Thanks Mike! I have a nesting box project in my Round Tuit file!

I know this is an old subject but I thought I would reply after finding some software to help with Nesting

deepnest.io is a great option I found this weekend and has been helping me on many projects.
