Need some welding done. Small project. Will pay

I need to modify 4 pieces of table hardware made out of that really hard wood called steel!

This picture shows one side of a 2"*8" piece. Need a 3/4" tab welded on each side so I can move the hole.

Another view showing both holes:

There are 4 pieces, each needing two tabs. Probably a TIG task.

I will be at DMS from mid-afternoon Wed and staying until the end of a class at 9:30-ish if that’s convenient for anyone willing to do this. Can also schedule a different time as well. Let me know!

@Cyberzombie78 might be able to help.

What is the surface coating on the steel and what is the pedigree of the steel?

Only certain alloys are technically weldable, and only certain alloys are allowed to be welded at DMS.

It looks like it might be powder or e-coated

Pedigree …hmm, didn’t get papers, so guessing mongrel!

There is a surface coating, possibly powder.
It is magnetic and there is a steel plug spot welded in one end of each piece.

I also meant to add that the steel is about 0.06 inch thick I’m pretty sure it’s carbon steel. It is not galvanized.

That’s good to hear at least.

If it’s a powder coat you’d want to grind back at least an inch in all directions from the weld and re-paint or powder coat after welding.

Spot welded doesn’t always mean “weldable” but it’s at least a step in the right direction.

Sounds like it’s a fun project for whoever’s interested. Can you PM me what you’d be willing to pay?

All I ask is that I’m charged something the person feels is fair. I don’t really know how long this will take I just need it done.

That’s pretty rare, and it’s honorable.

I’ve sent Bert some PMs, but I won’t be able to weld anything up for him for a couple weeks, so if anyone else beats me to it no hard feelings.

Off the top of my head, Tim, Jim, James, Charles, and many others should be capable of welding it up.

I agree on TIG being probably the best route due to the thinness of the material (you’d be hard pressed to get MIG not blowing through without a lot of testing).
