I know manufacturing isn’t allowed at DMS, but I am looking to have several sets of 5’x5’ 3/4 Birch Plywood CNC cut and was wondering if anyone here runs a business or outside operation from DMS that offered this type of service?
I have the cad file, but I imagine a cut file will need to be created.
Only certain things can’t be manufactured at DMS, like firearms (though woodworking a stock without the rest of the gun is fine). Automotive doesn’t allow any commercial work at all is another matter.
But generally you can do batch jobs as long as you still act Excellent towards other members.
The things to keep in mind if you’re doing a larger job :
things like endmills for CNC either pickup your own, or contribute to the committee since you wear/break things faster
plan your jobs so you can step back and let some others use the machines if you can hit a break point
some committees, like Laser, have queues and rules for how long you can operate a machine when the queue is in effect
classes and teaching have priority
try and run the job during non-peak times if possible
cleanup / other rules all still apply since it’s a shared shop and no job is too good for it
Lots of people use the lasers to make items to sell (you can do a lot of cutting in our 3 hour time limit). And a lot of those users are also most likely to report issues and volunteer to fix them (which I really appreciate).
The caveat is that it’s best to have a backup plan is DMS equipment is out of service for long periods of time (like some lasers are right now).
Wow how things appear to have changed. Wasn’t that long ago a certain Treasurer was on the war path about how inappropriate it was to make things to sell, especially in Woodshop. Nevermind that it was very commonplace in certain other groups. SMH!
Rule 2.7.2 has existed for quite a while about commercial work on DMS equipment. Most people do not abuse this:
DMS may invoice members for incurring costs to DMS significantly in excess of their monthly dues. Determination of excess to be submitted by Committee Chairs and the member billed by resolution of the Board.
