Heyyo Makers,
Is there anyone out there who has any knowledge or skills to share in small jewelry soldering? I need some help turning earrings into hat pins. I can come whenever you are at the space and would greatly appreciate the help!
Thanks in advance!
First thing what kind of metal are the earrings? Do they have any
stones in them?
Welllll, it depends…
If your starting earring is the type with a loop at the top, you could create/buy a finding to attach and no need for solder (think stickpin or safety pin type arrangement or make your own adapter). For findings, start with Fire Mountain or Monsterslayer for cheap experimental options. Also Rio Grande Jewelers might have something.
If it’s the post kind of earring, if the gauge is strong enough and not a base-metal, you could sharpen it and get a clutch-pin type back (going blank on correct search term, but I know you can buy those, check the base-metal findings places above, the first two mentioned)
If you want to actually solder something, you definitely need to know what metal you’re working with. Cheap base metal type earrings aren’t going to be candidates for solder (well, plain copper/brass ok, but not coated stuff like imitation rhodium “silver” earrings). Sterling silver etc is ok. You get into a whole nuther can of worms if stones attached though.
Another thought is if metal is issue, you could get pin backs and glue on with good strong glue, like E6000 etc
And a lot of hat pins are poor quality sttel, I would say
bring them in and let some of us look at the earring
and at the hatpins you want to use,
