Back to the thing about old leather couches…most are bonded leather which is the particle board version of leather (like 4 to 20% leather dust mixed into plastic and adhesives). Even a lot of top grain sofas still have vinyl on the back. Just like a lot of leather boots have shafts and/or tongues made out of synthetics.

As a leather alternative for pattern designing, waxed duck would be my choice as it behaves a lot like leather…vinyl, not so much.

We donated my dad’s skin when he died…to LifeGift to be made into grafts for burn victims, so I’m seriously hoping this is not a real thing.

However, there is a fashion designer advocating making leather for bags and jackets from lab grown skin using Alexander McQueen’s DNA… .http://www.harpersbazaar.com/fashion/designers/news/a16718/alexander-mcqueen-skin-bags-and-jackets/ …lol…wonder where PETA would stand on “grow your own” lab-made leather.

Interesting.
Didn’t know there was such a thing.

Still creepy…

never heard of this. A quickie google turns up culinary delights or waxed clothing options… Can you point me to what “waxed duck” is in this context?

PS thank you for the elaboration on the couch thing. I’ve often wondered about these very things, since it sees like most leather couches look more vinyl-y when they wear…

Waxed duck is a waxed canvas, typically cotton or linen. In my experience, duck is usually the term for the heavier weight stuff. The vendor I use is http://www.bigduckcanvas.com/waxed-canvas.html. it works great in conjunction with leather if you need to reduce cost on a large project like duffle or tote bags. The good stuff sews like a dream, but the cheap material will gum up your needle(s) and feed dogs, bad. It wears well and gets that distressed patina like full grain leather does so they compliment each other well.

I usually give the name Donner. That way they have to say it: Donner Party

I used duck cloth to make my mat for laying prone to shoot. It was rather difficult to sew something 6ft long without the right gear. It’s definitely tough stuff.
