Milling wide board

I have a board that is 12" wide I’m wanting to mill - I think that makes it too wide for the jointer. I’ve flattened panels that wide using the planer and a sled with shims, and I am confident I could go that route. I’ve also seen videos where people used the jointer but had to remove the guard, etc. and then still had to use a sled of sorts for the planer.

Is there a “best” way to do this? Any recommendations?

New tool coming online for just this process.

@mblatz, so I’m guessing you recommend going straight to the planer with a sled rather than using the jointer?

@SWA I’ve seen the posts on the slab sled - and I’d love to find the project that needs it (and the money for a sexy slab), but a 12" board (and less than 5ft) should fit through the planer, and a sled shouldn’t be too difficult.

The CNC router could do it. Oh, but no one can use that

Yes, given your description of your stock. There might be a technique that allows face jointing a board on a jointer wider than its capacity, but the planer+sled approach was quick and simple for me.

Smart ass
The torque wrenches finally came in yesterday.

You can run 12” wide boards on the joiner… 12” is the max
